To be fair now the GK Position in this day in age has changed a lot in the last 10-15 years now. These days, Keepers are more adept with the ball and obviously sweeping as well.

The era of old-school Goal Keepering as in just being a Pure shotstopper and nothing else, is gone now. Goalkeepers have to be able to do more now.

I can see why Zubi, at the time, was so invested in bringing in Ter Stegen. He had the tools and potential to be our long term GK, being so good on the ball while also being a modern-day sweeper keeper.

I'm not sure what happened with Mats over the years. He came up Big a number of times in the League, but something just didn't click for him in Europe. He struggled to impose himself, and it just seemed like he couldn't save even weak shots.

Nothing happened with Stegen over the years. He was weak mentally and a cry baby since he came. His consistent level never was more than Gladbach level.

He has been voted Barca player of year multiple times and seen as one of top GKs in Europe.

Every single player near enough.. including Messi.. had too many dips in Europe.

I never rated him personally. Couldn't care less how others rate him. For me he was never good enough. He made crazy blunders at Gladbach and made crazy blunders last season also. His progression in 10 years has been zero almost.

Of course. And I would give credit to people who rated players when I didn't. With Stegen, my initial impression has been proven right over the years.

Now maybe Flick is a miracle worker and will make this guy save some tough shots in CL. After 99 goals conceded in 83 games or so... god knows he needs to prove he's not a bum on the big level.
