England is not talentless. They just produce different players. Not most technically gifted or flashy with their dribbling. But effective, disciplined and athletic.

I don't think Gordon is gifted with some enormous natural talent either. But he has the intelligence, he has the technical fundamentals (doesn't lose the ball, good first touch, doesn't panic in tight situations), he is gifted with speed and strength. Overall a pain in the ass for opponents. Especially knowing Yamal is on other side and you have to give Gordon less attention.

I think that’s a fair summary. England players will never be on the same level technically as Spain or Portugal. But they’ve definitely improved generally in recent years. Keep an eye of Max Dowman coming through who plays in a style that’s about as un-English as you can get and is a superb dribbler.
