18 - Gerard Martín

There are some terrible things going on in the world right now, a lot of which disgust me, but nothing would disgusts me more than paying 70m Euros to replace Martini with Bastoni. :lucho:

I watch both play and don't see much of a difference between the two at all. Yes I said it, Bastoni is not much better than Gerard, IF AT ALL. A deluxe mixture of Bastoni being massively overrated and Gerard being underrated.

If such a monstrosity comes to pass, it will go down about as well as the infamous Zlatan Eto swap. Such would be the skidmark on the soul of this club, that I would immediately be DECO OUT, even if the transfer window includes Haaland, Hakimi, Kvaradona, Elvis Presley, Tupac and Lily Philips.

Thank you for your attention in this matter ! ( Donald Trump emoji because we don't have one any more ) 🥺

imo he's clearly our best defender. i have no trust in Garcia and Cubarsi when it comes to champions league

Straight up Gerard Martin is making me a believer. In fact I would be willing to bet Flick is totally good with him to start next season on.

Still would like 1 CB signing. Maybe go for the Vuskovic and just build him into the RCB. Cubarsi could use competition and isn't going anywhere

Vušković could very well be among the most expensive options on the market right now. We'll need a CB this summer, especially if we manage to offload Araujo.

We might need 2 CB's if Ara also leaves especially if Eric moves to RB. But the second CB should be a very cheap one, preferably an experienced "good enough" from LL.

He wasn't going to play either way, and even unlikely for 26 squad list.
But it would have been nice recognition for his development.

Fuck martin.
He's gonna fold anytime we face real competition.

Solid squad player though considering he can fill two positions.

i'm okay with him not making the spanish call up. he's our most important defender so i'd rather he not get injured

Most Barca fans are up for a rude awakening with this guy.

DLF is an idiot but no manager in his right mind would even think of starting Martin with the choices Spain has on CB. And even on bench he likely won't get any minutes.

The only reason Flick starts him is because we are in damn trenches. Not because he is anywhere near our best CB.

His only shot would be on LB. But there are also much better LBs. Martin offers nothing in attack except low crosses and his pace is dogshit so will be food for every black winger.

Top marks for all his commitment and how much he gave to improve himself. But often fans don't have the ability to balance praise with reality.

He has arrived in fantastic condition this preseason. Already looks ready to play.

Because of his fairly obscure background it is easy for fans to treat him as a replaceable player, but he really has earned his space in this first-team.

He is not as bad as some fans make out and is versatile too.

I think most of cules now see the value in him and that he more than earned a spot on the squad, it truly is a Flick masterclass. Nobody saw the logic behind it when he first started playing him but Flick was right once again, big credit to Martin who seems to be a hard worker too.

Him being a starter, especially partnered with a 19 year old is a stretch though, he should be a backup to a reliable, top class LCB and cover LB when we want a more defensive one too.

I will never rate him.

He's not terrible and rarely makes mistakes, but he's also not someone to really step up. He's just there doing his job - a rather mediocre placeholder. I think the club can do better than that. Also a lot worse to be fair.

Generally I would be more than happy with him as CB number 3 or 4.

Y'all not ready for Martini 3.0

The second season is usually the most difficult. I know, basically it will be his third real season, but he was a LB back then. Last season Hansi transformed him into a CB and this will be his make or break season. I don't think he will take this challenge lightly as he has - according to various sources - cut his holiday very short and is taking advantage of not being part of the World Cup. Guy is working individually and is taking advice by a Sports Medicine Clinic with a specific training plan. Probably is also studying his mistakes and learning from them. Remember Raphinha said he would even go to war with Gerard Martin. Shows that he has the right mentality. You don't only need talents, you also need fighters who make it despite all the obstacles and people who tell them they are not good enough.

He is obviously a great professional and a hard working guy but he is not Barca level footballer. Not really bench material either.

A lot of his mistakes have been overlooked by people because they know he should not be here in the first place, so we've cut him some slack. And that's okay. But we must not let that turn into overrating him.

Think people forget bench player can easily turn to 1st option if one injury happens. This is why at club like Barça which competes for all titles even bench players must have a certain level.
