Roony's role here was primarily to keep Yamal rested, not necessarily happy. I love Flick, but he struggles with rotation. For instance, Yamal played 5/5 Copa matches this season, from start to finish. You can't persuade me there was a sporting reason behind that. Flick's got his bigger-than-life approach to most, if not all, games, which is part of the experience, but it does mess with implementing a serviceable rotation policy. It's not up to Yamal, but it's somewhere in between. There is the Lucho way: "I decide who and when I sub and if you show public discontent, you won't play anymore". There is also the Flick meets player half way, not being too strict and listen to their wishes as long as they're not disrespecting the squad like arriving too late. And if he has no sporting reason to play Roony, then it's even easier to make Lamine happy.
My personal belief is that Roony deserved more chances with what he's shown on the pitch in sporadic and brief opportunities he's had. I also think it would've suited both him and Yamal. I don't see him in training, but none of us do. So there's that.
I don't necessarily disagree with anything you're saying here, it's just that I think that in our position being a tad less rigid would be beneficial.
