19 - Roony Bardghji

It's not up to Yamal, but it's somewhere in between. There is the Lucho way: "I decide who and when I sub and if you show public discontent, you won't play anymore". There is also the Flick meets player half way, not being too strict and listen to their wishes as long as they're not disrespecting the squad like arriving too late. And if he has no sporting reason to play Roony, then it's even easier to make Lamine happy.
Roony's role here was primarily to keep Yamal rested, not necessarily happy. I love Flick, but he struggles with rotation. For instance, Yamal played 5/5 Copa matches this season, from start to finish. You can't persuade me there was a sporting reason behind that. Flick's got his bigger-than-life approach to most, if not all, games, which is part of the experience, but it does mess with implementing a serviceable rotation policy.

My personal belief is that Roony deserved more chances with what he's shown on the pitch in sporadic and brief opportunities he's had. I also think it would've suited both him and Yamal. I don't see him in training, but none of us do. So there's that.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you're saying here, it's just that I think that in our position being a tad less rigid would be beneficial.

I don't know what @ZenI has against Roony.

We will pretty comfortably get the 2m back and I can bet my house and whole family on that.

Roony has been okay in the minutes he got. Often did more than we expected from him. You are making him look like some absolute disaster and a guy who fumbled everything in every minute he played.
Against him? He's simply far from Barca level, very far - that's it. It's a waste of time and space...

Here are the key statements he made, translated from Swedish when he was with the NT by SVT:

  • On deserving more playing time: "I have patience, but honestly, I think I deserve to play more".
  • On his overall satisfaction: When asked if he was happy with his role, he said: "No. I'm not 100% happy, but that's football."
  • On respecting his teammates: "I have the utmost respect for those who have been in the squad for a long time; they're my teammates. I know what I can do, and I have a lot of confidence in myself"

No. I am not 100% happy and I deserve to play more - that’s the bottom line that glued his ass to the bench. I think it had the intended impact because you could see his body language of a punished player and when he got minutes after Lamine’s injury he tried to rise to the occasion. I contend he actually played better than he had in terms of the collective play but was not decisive - that, for me, is normal at this age and inexperience at this level with Barça

I also think it reinforced that while he has impressed, he hasn’t been in a position to demand or expect anything more in terms of minutes in this squad. It’s also why it’s a virtual certainty he will be moved on to play more regularly, not an indictment on his future but that he clearly lacks the patience under Flick (after 6 months, mind you). That is a signal to a coach to move player rather than risk undermining team chemistry where everyone understands their role and does not complain publicly

He will absolutely have no shortage of suitors on loan although no one will want to take him on if they can’t profit from his continuity if it is only to help Barça - the issue that always falls on Barça players on loan. Which is why I think it’ll have to include a buy option ala Trincao et al

I think he f’d up which is a shame, I was looking forward to what he could bring and I was impressed with his qualities and did quite a bit of background research on his path to professional football - a recommended deep dive for those interested, his story is very impressive. It makes his SVT error all the more surprising if not disappointing but it is what it is. Seems minor but at a club like Barça, you tread lightly else face consequences - public complaining, a big no no

Yeah man but elephant in the room noone talks about is Yamal not wanting to be benched. Would probably throw a fit if Flick left him out from couple of games.

Flick was once asked if he takes a Copa match against third league a bit less serious or something like that. He answered ask Real Madrid. In the new format, you can easily get eliminated in the Copa even against a far inferior opponent.
Then we can start discussing at what point during a lead was it more or less safe to rotate Lamine out. But we speak without the pressure of responsibility. We can easily say, well here we lead and he could have subbed him. But if the entire club and millions of fans depend on it, you don't make a decision easily.

edit: And it's not like we lead a Copa match comfortably enough to be sure of victory. 2:1 against Albacete, 2:0 against Santander (90th minute goal from Lamine), 2:0 against Guadalajara (90th minute Rashford). I wouldn't have subbed Roony in either with just one goal lead.

Look I have nothing against Roony, seems to be a good kid but his performances after Yamal injury have been extremely mediocre and the opponents haven't been anything extraordinaire to explain why he is struggling to make a play in the offensive zone instead of just playing the ball back. He should have been the most motivated player to show what he is capable of but we didn't see none of that in those games. To me he simply isn't good enough to be regular sub for us yet.

Copa is a 3rd tier tournament in itself. To depend on Lamine on it is preposterous to say at least.
Ask Real? Sure, but at the end both of us ended up without the trophy.

You play with your bench for the most part and live with the results. The CdR was one of the reasons we were depleted in the CL against Atletico. How we managed ourselves in it was stupid.

Regarding Flick, if what Roony said was a reason "to glue his ass" then he is a snowflake tbh. But Roony was on the bench before that, and actually got playing time later. I doubt it us the factor that folks imagine it to be.

We don't really know that, but even if true so what? I don't think he presents Flick an ultimatum - "play me or else"... He just wants to play and Roony is a backpassing merchant who doesn't really help us much so the choice was easy enough for Flick.

We simply didn't have any backup at RW/LW and 9, even our Masia/Atletic players on those positions got injured. We were stuck with Roony who simply isn't good enough even for Copa after second round. So we play Lamine who wants to play. It's not rocket surgery...
Also, Flick didn't glue his ass because of that comment - Roony simply doesn't offer much, end of...

Jezuz fuck, what is up with this forum and 0 ball knowledge??? Why is half the forum opening their ass cheeks for Roony who wouldn't even walk into current Copenhagen side??? People lost their mind or what? 1 lucky goal and 1 elastico, rest has been backpassing - and people jump on Flick's and Yamal's back?? Wtf is going on????? Dude is slow and weak, he fucking isn't even a winger - and we want to be a contender for CL?? If Yamal is out we can kiss our chances goodbye with Ronny at RW.

Finally a mental breakdown, now this feels like barcaforum. Roony fucked your wife/husband or something?

There is no defending that. Sorry. You can find reasons, but there is no defending burning out your biggest players for key CL stage because you fear Albacete in some early Copa del Rey phase.

Nobody is burning out anybody... first stages of Copa don't coincide with laters stages of CL, not like Yamal is going all in anyway in those matches. Also, we want to go through or Flick would have hell - so give us better backups than fucking Roony who obviously can't help us against even LL 3 ffs...

This is exactly the reason why we dont do well in UCL. Even after having the God player with us, and us winning 70-80% of the domestic trophies in the last 2 decades. This is exactly why.

We focus too much on the Copa, which is still a 3rd tier cup. We have the most Copa, and now almost close to Real's LaLiga trophies.

I hope next season, our number 1 priority is UCL, and every decision we make is aiming at the March-May part of the season.

Dude I am chill... but stop lifting this dude up as he could cover RW when we're against decent teams.
That's my point and where you are wrong. He doesn't need to do it against decent teams, he needs to do it against shit teams.
We have Raphinha & Yamal for decent teams.

Flick should stop being a pussy ass bitch, and play Roony exclusively against shit teams, and say no to Yamal.

I don't think he's good enough to get any minutes, he got more than he should have. We simply didn't have ANY backups and so he played - we should rely on Masia next season though.
