Still unconvinced he can compete athletically at top level.
Appears slow and reluctant off the ball. When intensity is on he looks behind the game. Generally looks gassed quickly.
Then there's the injuries, both the big one and now this. Obviously could be completely unrelated but also fit into the story of a player who overextends himself in order to keep up with the game, which comes at the expense of composure and control of limbs in critical situations. Which is when injuries happen.
Hopefully we have a physio team looking at the particulars of his case. Obviously talented so could be great if he overcomes it.

We'll have a better idea about him next season if he stays healthy. This season is about returning and getting used to this level of football, I think he has done very well but the concerns that you wrote about are real. Next season after a full preseason, fully healthy and in rhythm should show us if he's able to compete at this level or not. He has a high ceiling but we still don't know if he'll be able to hide his slowness and if he'll be able to become a lot more physical. He has the frame for it.

Nobody is thinking about loaning him, that would be stupid. He'll get plenty minutes, he'll probably start the season as a starter and be a first sub for both Rodri and Pedri after that. A perfect situation for him to develop without pressure and learn. Brining Rodri is good for him, not bad.

Needs to work on positioning. It's good we signed midfielder relying on him for first half of season would be big gamble
Not doing a good job in aerial duels either, which he should considering height

What qualities? Extremely one footed, slow, weak for his height. Can you tell me what he brings to the team exactly they anyone else could have? He's like a temu Andre gomes

Found it easier with Pedri on though.

He struggles to progress the ball from DM.
Needs to get a lot better at it.
Gavi cant do it either to date and as a pair it was woeful.

Did way too little to progress and circulate the ball.
When general play is as bad as it was in the first half, you have to look critically at the midfield. For Gavi as usually there was no structure to what he did. For Bernal there was a lot of standing around and only receiving the ball when incidentally space opened up around him. Made it very easy for the opponent to stifle our game. As a midfielder you have to do more than occasionally play a nice pass.
Then Pedri came on and did everything. Made himself available, carried the ball, played it off, made the game flow. Then Bernal looked less exposed but not because he improved himself, was just being babysat.
