It's not that simple really. Spain's whole system was protecting that backline from being overran.

I don't buy this stuff that him and Laporte are suddenly much better than what they've displayed in the league this year(both didn't make team of the season in LL).

But for sure we need a much better partner for him.
 
The NT is different. It's like NBA Vs Euro league. Slower, less individual, more team positioning and blocking of spaces in transitions.

Things that worked with the Spain team, wouldn't work in club football.

But then, if Inigo worked than a Laporte would work here. But someone like Willy Saliba who has both great anticipation, positioning AND recovery pace would be the best option we could go for.

I would have waged a small bet (well I don't bet...) on Pacifico being a nice surprise package had he not got injured. Very interesting player.
 
While taking nothing away from cubarsi and Simon.

Like porque said if martin and mats started for Spain they would still win the WC .lol

FIFA is just taking that into conversation. Like how many saved did Simon actually have to make etc.

But obviously he was the best defender of the tournament
 
Cubarsí was the best CB there.

Lisandro Martinez was poor often.

He is a bizarre choice but as made final gets in it appears.

Cubarsí was huge reason Spain won.

Two no10s being picked in midfield feels a bit off as will always have better stats playing there but were the best three.
 
I always thought he was overrated but fair enough, he proved me absolutely wrong this tournament. Hopefully, he can pull this amazing form into the upcoming season, and perhaps we can get a little closer to that European Cup.
 
Cubarsi is tiki-taka's finest CB example. But his calma libero CB style doesn't fully fit Flickball's high line of pressing.

DLF kept Spain's game always in the middle. Always. Argentina parked the bus whole game, but Spain never opened up, no space for speedy football. France were worse tactically, their whole system collapsed.

Cubarsi is elite defender now, has the confidence of world champion and best CB of the tournament. But skillwise he has yet to prove this and fans of the game prefer physically dominant defenders. The first sign is usually brainless kamikaze defending, Phil Jones style.

Cubarsi needs someone experienced as CB partner, who coordinates the defense, so he can focus entirely on his own game. He's too young and too inexperienced still to lead a defense with 19 and focus on his own game simultaneously. It's no coincidence he looked better with Inigo by his side and also in Spain, that's not only because of tactics or deeper line.

He still needs 2-3 years of guidance, while he hones his own skills and gets experience what it means to lead a defense. No Puyol, Pique or whoever lead a defense on the highst level with 19.

Simply said, he can't be paired with Martin. That's why it's important to bring in such a CB. Not only as an upgrade to Martin, but also as an upgrade to Cubarsi.
 
Has the season progressed he and the entire defense was making the same kinda mistake when he had Martinez as a partner as when he had martin.

Fans are just clutching at straws with that one. Laporte wasn't doing any organizing of the defense at the WC. The entire defense just knew what they were doing because they were coached a particular way.

If he needs a partner with any particular ability it's one with more recovery pace that
him.
 
Spain have immediately 11 men behind the ball when its lost and the first press fails within less than 10 seconds.

Barca leave 6 at the back at most at all times, even when leading in the 92nd minute in a CL game.

It's not rocket science. But at the same time Spain has a hard time scoring and it's not only because of Oyarzabal or Baena. In La Liga you take Flick's approach. In CL better against strong teams to do it the Spain way. Only problem is: To do things at elite level, you need muscle memory and pattern recognition. Not easy to go gung-ho 10 La Liga games in a row then switch to conservative approach within a single CL game.

That's why defensive teams can fluke it but Barca with attacking football has to play at all-time levels to win CL.
