It's being mentioned a lot in the other topics, so I’ll open a separate topic.

What is the current opinion on the Ballon d’Or?
  1. If Argentina win and Messi delivers another decisive performance, then it seems clear.
  2. If Argentina win only, is Messi still the favourite?
  3. If Spain win and Yamal has good performance, would that be enough?
  4. If Spain win without Yamal doing anything special, who would then have the best chances?
  5. Does Kane have a chance if he scores and finishes third?
After the final, I can add a poll.

Yamal vs Messi, don't think it even matters how much either performs in the final. The story writes itself; the bathtub pic, the GOAT vs the heir, potential passing down of the crown, Messi's last world cup etc. Kinda how some of the MOTM have been decided at this WC, the PR will be very strong.

Lamine has LL and a decent G+A season behind him, so-so WC up until now.
Messi has an incredible WC at 39 years of age but is slightly hindered playing in MLS.

Would still say Messi is the more deserving winner.
 
Yamal is my favourite young player but he shouldnt be in the conversation with only la liga snd being like the fifth best player on Spain. It would be different if he had carried them hard imo.

When you say this, you have to list who you think should win it instead. So we can laugh when it’s mbappe, dembele, and Kane who disappeared in the semi-finals. Kane also did nothing in the quarters.
 
If Spain win, Yamal. If Argentina win, Messi. Really as simple as that. And no Kane is not in contention with only Bundesliga title, we know trophies are everything in ballon d'or now.

As Tempt already said Kane would deserve it but semi final was a bit too early + he didnt win cl

It will be between Messi and Yamal i think, depends on the winner of thr tournament
 
Was just thinking about this. There is no obvious winner really. You can't give it to Yamal or Messi because of their club seasons and everyone else shat the bed.

I am biased but I would make an argument for Kane based purely on the fact that he has scored more competitive goals in a single season than any player in history bar Messi 11/12.

Yamal won last la liga player of the season. His club season is literally what’s carrying him. Also this is wc year, Messi get it’s it if he wins the final.

Kane is not getting it after the disappearing act in the last two wc games. No one one cares about him stat padding in bundesliga in a wc year

Yamal is La Liga player of the season. And deservingly so. He had monster performances in the league.

He was also great in the CL and one of our best players in the Atletico games.

Kane had a great season but only won Bundesliga. Winning a ballon d'or with that today is very hard.

I don't think what I said would be controversial outside of this forum. Nobody outside of Barca was touting Yamal for a Ballon d'Or win before this tournament. All the talk was about Mbappe, Olise and Kane.

You made it sound like Yamal was shit/mediocre mate.

He had a top, top season for us. Up there with the very best players of last season. Easily top 5 (and there's nothing really between them).

Yes, because everyone stupidly assumed that it would be a France vs England final while some of us kept warning that Spain and Argentina were being underrated. Mbappe, Olise, and Kane did what I knew they would do, disappear against the first great team they played. We’re not giving them grace just cause you guys overrated them. It’s a wc year and winning it matters

Because Yamal was not in a WC final mate

If it was just the club season Yamal wouldn't win it. But when you add WC to that, he becomes a very solid candidate.

Exactly. No one else in this Spain team had a ~top 5 itw club season.

If he has a great game against Argentina he will have decided the two biggest games this world cup.
