BTW, his market value according to TM is only 3m though that was 4 months ago and will surely go up in next update after a NT call up.
Would be interesting to see how the club compares Dias to:
1. Nijstad - he is already playing in the 6th/7th best league in Europe and will get his fair share of European experience this season though the opponents Twente will play against in the league stage of UECL besides Freiburg are likely of somewhat mid-to-lower table Segunda level if even that.
And unless they face a team like Getafe, Monaco, Brighton or Atalanta in the KO phase then probably won't play against any of the teams that could be top half in La Liga. And being competitive against these teams is at least the current level we should expect from a youngster who would come in and play against maybe half of the LL opponents while he adapts and develops over next 12-18 months.
We were ready to pay 10m but would we go to 15-20m if needed and would that be enough? Or does Twente believe some PL club will pay 25-30m (or even more) which is probably where we would totally go out of the race unless we really see him as one who can immediately come in and compete with and eventually take over Martin's spot within a year.
But does the club really rate Nijstad's potential that high? Or did we see him as another (a bit more expensive) punt like Faye, Onstein, Pacifico, Baza,.. Basically throw them at the wall and see if one of them sticks. If he does, then great, if not, continue to search.
And second, do they believe having two teenage starters at arguably the most important/responsible position on the pitch where experience is needed is the way to go? For as great as Cubarsi is and as good as Nijistad could become I'm not sure this would really be the best option.
And if talking about that 30m price range then we can probably say the same about Dias who will also have one full season in Brasileirao behind him.
With 10 round remaining Athletico PR currently sits 3rd behind Flamengo and Palmeiras who are in a league of their own, especially financially. They will likely play in the Copa Libertadores next year which is probably another reason they won't want to sell Dias, at least not for cheap.
Overall I would say Brazilian Serie A is above the Eredivisie level but in certain aspects I trust the Dutch football school more than Brazilian one these days when it comes to how they could potentially adapt here.
2. Lucas Herrington - according to his agent we were very interested in him last summer but price just got out of the way, especially after his solid performances at the WC. We were apparently willing to pay around 10m but he ultimately went for double that price to Hull City. But while we surely liked his profile he's right-footed so doesn't exactly fit what Flick is looking for.
If anything then club probably thought of Herrington more as a replacement for Christensen than a long-term partner for Cubarsi. He's also an Australian who played in the MLS not a "hot" Brazilian wonderkid. And while nationality shouldn't play a role in player's pedigree and price (you are either good or not regardless of where you come from) we know that's not always the case.
