NT history power ranking

After the 26 World Cup, I think there have been some changes to the history power ranking of NTs. People sometimes judge it based off only WCs won, which is honestly nonsense.

1. Brazil
2. Germany
3. Argentina
4. Italy
5. Spain
6. France
7. Netherlands
8. England
9. Uruguay
10. Croatia

Spain jumps ahead of France, Argentina ahead of Italy, England ahead of Uruguay

My reasons are

1. Spain now has same WCs like France, with 2 more Euro trophies. Two golden generations, two dominant campaigns. All time XI clears.

2. Italy won 2 WCs before WW2, some of them reasonably questioned for corruption and match fixing because of their fascist regime. No WC qualification for 16 years while Argentina created another golden gen. Messi and Maradona. Arg lost 4 finals, more than anyone bar Germany.

3. Uruguay been inactive since 1950 and Maracanazo. Short bursts in 2010 bronze medal, great team in 2018 but now fell off completely. England reached back to back Euro finals, bronze medal in this WC, only 1 WC less. Created a more stacked all time XI over time.

* I was not sure who to put 10th. There is a lot of candidates tbh. Hungary is there. Croatia with a silver medal in WC and two bronze medals and also a solid all time XI but no major trophies. But if you count Yugoslavia achievements to them as well then they are in.

This seems about right. I would still have Italy and Argentina about equal.

And Brazil and Germany about equal. Germans have more WC finals despite 1 less trophy and have beaten 4 great teams for those (Mighty Magyards, Total Football Dutch, Maradona, Messi). And a lot of Euro success too. Brazil have higher peaks at the WC and more glamour and mystique.

What makes a generation golden? France also had two golden gens - Zidane's and Mbappe's

And your list doesn't include the runner-ups which I find important in the equation.
 
France is equal to Spain, both from the legends perspective and also the silverware

4 WC finals, 2 won (lost 2 on pens)
2 Euros, 3 finals (or 4?)

That's what I was thinking. And all time 11 is debatable, apart from Casillas>any France GK.

France has 2 WC 2 Euro
Spain has 2 WC 4 Euro

I don't think they are equal. Yeah France had their chances to make it more than 2 WCs and maybe even be at the level of Italy and Germany now, but they didn't.

As for Euros, Spain clears them.

Winning Euro and then WC is what makes a generation golden.

What is golden about Mbappe generation? They won 1 WC. They got to another final where they got schooled and Mbappe almost bailed them out. In fact that whole campaign was Mbappe carryjob.

Nah, finals matter a lot. Otherwise, Italy is ahead of Argentina. Argentina has more WC finals, especially in modern era.

so we're erasing 2 finals they lost on pens just because :lol:

wanna make it fair? use a scoring system:
WC win is 3 points/WC final 2 points or 1 point(even though i think it is way harder to reach the final in a WC than Euro)
Euro win is 2 points/Euro final 1 point

No because like I said 2 of Italy's world cups are basically Uruguay level of relevance. Even worse.

There are some valid accusations of corruption in those WCs because of Mussolini regime.

There is that story that in the semis against Austria in one of the WCs their ref prevented Austria from scoring by heading the ball away from their player.

Especially the 1934 world cup. You can look it up.

And when you look at it from a historical perspective it makes perfect sense. Why would Mussolini bother with all the fuss of hosting a world cup, which was a new thing, in his country at that time if not to make his country win at all costs?

It is documented. He would take the refs for a dinner before every game and intimidated them to call in Italy favour.

Refs called off obvious goals for their opps (Spain in QF), ignored brutal fouls by Italians and allowed Italians a goal that involved a foul in the QF game.

I mean it's one thing when twitter trolls accuse teams of bribing refs or FIFA but this is already an obvious set up. It doesn't take much to realize why Mussolini even hosted that WC in the first place.

Theres no way you put Uruguay at 9. I dont care how much they've fallen off, if you're going to discredit their achievements because of how old they are, don't call this thread "history". In addition to 2 wc, they had the most copa americas until recently that Argentina overtook them.

They're probably #7.

Spain and France for #5 is difficult to rank, but I'd favor France slightly more for their number of wc finals.

It's not because of how old they are it's because they have been achieved in a time when football was still rising and not yet developed.

I can not put them ahead of Netherlands who invented a whole new school of football and had absolutely legendary teams in 70s and also in this century

Like I said, some people base it off just WC wins. It may seem like you are one of them. To me it makes no sense

For Copa America, yeah they deserve credit for that. But it's not a very challenging competition and if Argentina or Brazil don't do it of course Uruguay will have a serious shot.
