11 - Raphinha

This type of production increase can only happen because the system of Flick is very much attack oriented. His football is a perfect match with the natural way of playing of Raphinha.

He was showing good stuff under Xavi too, but Flick helped him reach a higher, world class level. Let's see how much can he keep it. If he can keep it for years, we're talking about a future Barca legend. Another Brazilian to make his mark here.

Great post. Flick took a player like Gnabry, who I don't think is particularly great, and turned him to a killer for a few seasons. And he has done the same with Raphinha (who for the sake of the analogy, I think is a better all round player than Gnabry).

If we think back to Summer after the Euro, everyone wanted Nico for LW, I don't think anyone said we should keep Raphinha on the left as he is the perfect Flick type of player.

We have to keep that in mind, as the player we are witnessing this season is astounding that goes far beyond being more attacking. Flick's attacking understanding and nuance to unlock a player is far ahead of what we are giving him credit for.

Not to toot own horn but I said I preferred keeping raphinha on LW over getting Nico.

Well, there's also the fact that Flick is never subbing him tactically at all. The only time he is missing is to be rested. Xavi was extremely annoying because he demanded some specific things out of Raphinha, and Raphinha is simply not that type of player. Being a top player, he still delivered, but the one we see today is playing to his full potential in a system that suits him. Add to that the full trust of the manager, which makes him feel like one of the stars of the team, and that's what you get when everything else is there (speed, power, determination, stamina etc.).

I personally wanted Nico as the 3rd winger. With Yamal and Raphinha. Raphinha was never moving anywhere as one of the team's best players. I wanted Nico like we had Joao Felix last season, as an upgrade. Because I knew Ansu would be useless.

It didn't make sense to take one of your best engines off at 60 consistently. I recall there was a game where Raphinha was excellent, scored/assisted and then got his usual hook and visibly lost it.

Just very weird man management when Xavi said he was going to be meritocratic.

Yes. The constantly staying wide and then cutting inside getting into box beating the defender. Good thing Flick realized he’s the worst Brazilian at doing that and now has more freedom.

Raphinha needs freedom to move a lot and look for spaces in the middle, make runs. Which implies vacating his position often. Xavi's system, especially in the first season, was more rigid and aimed at controlling possession.
