19 - Lamine Yamal

He's clearly the attacking fulcrum of the team, but that's not a bad thing, he's a generational talent.

He's like a pressure release valve for the entire Team.

Our most important players this season, (not best).

Yamal
Casado
Raphinha
Pedri.

The two masia kids make the team tick, no surprise this is FC masia after all.
Balde needs to be on the list.

... 20. 20 years. 15 years would mean another Leo situation where he leaves and plays for another club. Nobody wants to see that again.

And he will still be good enough at 37 to get significant minutes in the first team.

This time we go all the way. Lamine here till retirement y nada mas.

Lamine, Pedri, Gavi in Inter Miami 2040, here we go!

I think people will find out the hard way that these guys who start playing super super early also end up retiring a bit sooner.

Mbappe won WC at 18 everyone thought he would become Pele 2.0 but we now see signs that he is already declining physically at 25/26
Rooney flamed out a bit early as well. Micheal Owen. Etc etc.

I hope he is around a long long time and kind of like Messi was he doesn't rely on physical attributes so much. Which is perfect. But don't be surprised if he is more like Iniesta retiring from the big leagues early than Messi/Ronaldo who were superhuman (rarely injured as well)

He'll almost have a 20 year career if he leaves at the age Iniesta did, not bad.

All the players that you mentioned were speed and/or power merchants, Lamine is a totally different player who should age better.

You're not wrong at all but I also included Iniesta at the end who was a pure skill guy who left early. I still think all those miles from a young age will add up over 15/20 yrs. I hope he goes until he is 36 don't get me wrong.

As Arsene Wenger always say: quick players age better if it isn't for injuries.
Losing a step means they are still quick, losing 2 means they are now average speed. Slow player lise a step and now they are easy to contain.

Both Messi and CR7 were super athletic, in different ways, and it helped them to have longer career. A player like Busquets or even Xavi were done and dusted by 32.

I also tend to agree that promoting players early is bad for their careers, the athletic had a nice piece about it, designed for Barca specifically btw with the likes of Gavi, Fati etc discussed. The main conclusion I get from it was that, at the end those players are rarity to ever have a conclusive evidence about it, so it is always up for opinion, but signs of players suffering from being used too much too early is there.

But then again, you can always point out to something to each case and say it wasn't being too early.

Hopefully, Lamine will be an exception, and the club can take care of him.

Does using a player early mean he also has fewer years at the top?

If you look at it relatively, Lamine retiring at 31 would equal Casado retiring at 36, with both then having played 15 years at top level, Lamine from 16, Casado from 21.

Yes but Iniesta was still good enough to be at least a rotational player for more years but he didn't want that. Iniesta was also a lot less athletic than Yamal is now (and he'll develop more probably) and had a career filled with injuries. We'll see how Yamal's career develops, it's very early to talk about things like that. We are talking about the year 2040 which seems unreal.

Summer 2040 is 15 and a half years away - and Yamal will still only be 33 that summer. Let that sink in.

Nearly 16 years and still 'only' 6 months older than Salah is now.

Not making any predictions on how long he will or won't play, just pointing out how incredibly young he is.

For reference, 15 and a half years ago was summer 2009 - when Barca won the CL in Rome and 22-year-old Messi was just cementing himself as a superstar,
