Shit, I watched the whole of the Robinho/Diego and Neymar/Ganso Libertodores runs back then.

The comparison is that we can not compare. Lamine is a way more mature player but would get kicked to pieces back then. Neymar had way more flair and footwork to milk the set pieces and avoid injury.

Neymar was the poster boy of Brazil football when he was at Santos. So sure he would gain a lot attention from media and thing like Ballon Dor. He finished in top 10 in 2011 for example.

Yamal also likely finishes in top 10 this year. At 17 years old (for what he did at 16 actually).

Neymar also had a strong Confederations Cup win in 2013 which contributed to a boost in Bdor ranking. But he was 21 back then, 4 years older than Yamal. Would bet Yamal will have a golden ball by then. And will be interesting to see where Yamal ends up in the ranking 2024, surely top 10.

Current Yamal has fewer rough edges compared to that Neymar, perhaps it's an effect of being adapted to European football.
