21 - Frenkie de Jong

Let's not forget that Gavi was starting here in his first season under Xavi as the 4th midfielder on the left wing.

There's a chance Flick Mighty Kim Jun Yens him there too for minutes.
Yea but Gavi is clearly not a LW and shit like this was largely why our attack looked so trash under Xavi. Gavi should never be on the wing, especially just for the sake of getting minutes.

A lot of us weren't surprised with Raphinha at all.
I knew he was a good player and always said so, but I pointed out he is not a wide/touchline winger and that is exactly what Xavi bought him for and played him as. At that point, he was not an ideal signing for Xaviball, but that didn't mean he wasn't a very good player. And while his heart and effort is an incredible bonus, it isn't his only quality.

We will almost certainly renew him, we don't have the funds to let go of great players as long as they want to stay because replacing him will be far more expensive than keeping him is.

It depends tbh.

He is on a high salary and would want more, renewals cost signing bonus in many cases too.

And honestly, if Bernal develops well do we even need a replacement for Frenkie?
Casado/Bernal - Pedri/Gavi - Olmo/Fermin for 6 players for 3 man midfield.

Then few other kids that might add depth like Prim, Hernandez, Soma, Aziz, Guille & Diarra who could all provide that 7th or 8th midfielder in case of injuries.

Selling Frenkie or letting him go could just clear space from the salaries to improve other areas.

And this isn't saying that we shouldn't try to renew him, but that we actually have the leverage in negotiations, because we actually can afford losing him. It is better than giving him a higher salary than we deem appropriate.

Good post.

That midfield 6 would be a dream as a Barca fan

If a Barca fan says, let's not sign a midfielder or go over the top to renew one, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I thought kimmich on a free would be a good deal.

But you can't really fight them on that point, we produce some of the best midfielders in the world, in house.

I wouldn't go too far above what we offered him, for him to renew. we have a couple de jongs just waiting to get an opportunity.

We are producing different profile of players now as well.

The good news is that until next summer, we can see if he's a key player under Flick or not. His injury situation is gonna get clearer also, gonna see if his ankle issue is over or it is chronic.

If he delivers on the pitch, I have no issues giving him a big contract. It's impossible to keep top performing players on anything less than top wages unfortunately.

Sure.
By no means I am advocating for either selling him or keeping him, but there is variables in the process that needs to be assessed.

Bug contract is also relative, Barcelona are always generous with their wage, so if they aren't accepting his wage demands at certain point during negotiations, then I would accept such decision.

Yes he might very likely. Doesn't want to play anywhere else. Where is he supposed to play?
Likes of Bayern, PSG, most top teams in PL probably won't want to buy him but if he's a free agent it's a great opportunity to snatch him. So he'll have more options to choose from compared to now and increases the chance of getting an enticing offer.

He hasn't done anything to warrant pay increase from Barca but it's very very rare players reduce salary unless they are like 32+ and renewing year for year.

If we can pay him now we can pay him same in 2026. That's what his agent will say. I think club would accept even if in a perfect world he reduces his wage a bit, it won't make much of a difference anyway.

Fucks up our wage structure, might make some players unhappy. His agent can say whatever he wants, I give zero fucks. There is no way we should offer Frenkie a new contract where he makes as much as Gavi, Pedri and Casado combined. Dude makes more than De Bruyne ffs and he's bang average. I hope we made it clear to him that it was a fluke he was signed under Barto, we ain't paying him a cent above 15M - that or we'll have to sell. Than some of you think he'll get offered a crazy wage elsewhere - based on what exactly lol? Even if for some fucked up reason he'll walk for free he won't be offered more than 15M. We have to keep a wage structure so we don't end up like we did post-covid with Amigos - even if we want to sign for example Oshimhen, 15M or NEXT!

A lot on a forum that claims to be the home of Barca fans shit talking their own player and having a meltdown after a great win while whinning about a player the coach singled out to have changed the course of the game....simply because of how much he earns as approved by a board.

This is unreal level of delulu!
