Defense isn't going to find an exit if whats in front doesn't move. Araujo was advancing from centre against Rayo and he had Roberto to right static. Not advancing past his attack with or without the ball. Pure handball play. Frenkie helped a ton because he gave dyanamism and the ability to progress with the ball.

To be fair to Iraola, he identified Araujo obvious limitations and just sat off of him and man marked his exit routes (well apart from Roberto where he was just blocked so he had no options but to go backwards) and it worked.

Going to sound like a fanboy lol: wait for it) here but in Almeria vs Madrid, one of the things that stuck out was how aggressively Kaiky moved forwards and backwards to find space and outlets for both his goalkeeper and his RWB and DMC. While we just had the mids (apart from Frenkie) move away from the ball, and Busi just tuck in and hide from the passing lane.

Tbh I watxhed 99% of Araujo games, he is not bad on the ball.

I don't know what do you want from CB, but he is decent on the ball.

He is not RB obviously, but damn people are talking like he is nissing every pass on CB position.

If our midfield was good, someone would be free to get the pass.

Garcia abd Christansen didn't give 10 forward passes, but again Araujo is "bad with his passing".

Araujo is definitely not that strong on the ball, not shockingly bad, but it is his weakness.

However, he is tall, fast, strong and good in the air. He reads the game decently and has the pace to get back during counters even if he is slightly out of position or to cover our of position fullbacks.

He was fantastic last season, and both CBs dont need to be amazing on the ball. If Busquets wasnt lost somewhere in between defense and attack all game and provided an outlet to defense instead of walking around, our defense wouldnt have such a hard time getting the ball out of defense and always having to play it to our wings.

Frenkie would be able to link defense and attack from deep 100x better than Busquets. Either by dashing forward himself or simply making himself available.

He doesnt need protection. He needs to be played as a CB because he's a CB, not a RB. You dont replace a young CB who's only weakness is being weak on the ball and long passes. A defender needs to defend first and foremost and he can do that, and he was free.

People love Puyol but forget he wasnt fantastic on the ball either or a great dribbler. He was good enough and a beast at everything else.

You play Araujo & Kounde as the CB partnership for the next decade or close to it & we shit the fuq up.

Get two fullbacks next summer, replace busquets and we move, or we have de jong get the ball off the defense & run 30 yard every time to connect the lines, because that's gonna work out perfectly long term.

I'm judging him as a cb from the Rayo game.

For me his bigger weakness is positioning than distribution though. If we're mobile we can get around his average ballplaying from CB.

He is not best passer in the world, but he is no where bad as people say.
