9 - Robert Lewandowski

I rate RL9 and Suarez above Benzema easily.

For most of his career, he was an upgraded version of Firmino. Benzema might be the most well rounded CF and an excellent team player but he has many clown/donkey moments in his game and became a bit of meme/punchline back in the day. If you go to the social media posts of Benzema renewing his contract in 2018(?), most of the Madrid fans were hating on him and wanted him gone. They watched him week in week out. Under Mourinho, there was a season when Higuain was just as good as Benzema and Jose used to rotate the 2 all season. Madrid were constantly linked to strikers like Lewandowski and Aubameyang. Perez publicly admitted that he tried to sign the former numerous times.

I really rate Benzema's all round game but at some point, we have to acknowledge that his finishing and goalscoring abilities have been erratic, unreliable and far from elite.
Every player has those clown moments though. Lewa has had them too. I have saw plenty of disasterclass Ronaldo compliations. I think those clown moments were overblown too - missing chances doesn't make someone a clown.

I like Benzema more than Lewa because I think his all-round game is superior - you prefer Lewa because he scores more goals. Neither viewpoint is wrong.

It's puzzling isn't it.

Lewy imo is very bland. He'd be a blimp for me had he not played for Barca, kinda like (some random examples of good players) Kane or Ribery, which of course Lewy is better than.
Even Suárez who was a flashier player doesn't have this sort of 'neutral' fanboyism, ie from people not supporting the club he plays for or having same nationality, which we have discussed.

There is a certain theme of the player he likes. Perhaps he prefers to look at certain men because that's what he prefers, which is fine. And this is based solely on the way he himself compares the looks of players he likes (Kaka, Lewy, CR) to those he dislikes. Common denominator.

The most important thing to know is he's more of a player supporter than a club supporter. That's the secret to his mindset.
For example, it doesn't matter that 99% of Liverpool connected people say Messi is best (Trent, Salah, Robertson, VVD, Klopp etc). He is hard coded to dislike and like certain players, that it doesn't matter what others say, even those he otherwise quote and listen to on other stuff.
I think that is true of a lot of football fans though - we have natural biases in how we like to see the game played and gravitate to those who fulfil those wishes, and rail against those who don't. I have my biases too in terms of players I like. But I acknowledge (mostly) that the players who don't fall as much into how I like the game to be played can be better maybe.

I get your point but I think a lot of football fans are like that.

I think the stuff about the looks is something a lot of fans these days are into. They talk about the fashion of players etc. Like I don't think Ronaldo is good looking at all, but he definitely has a lot of in-the-closet fans (don't mean you Tempt).

Tempt is a really great guy and I like him a lot. Still, I don't know why he loves Lewa so much. I can't think of any reason why he would love him much more than Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Benzema, Suarez, Salah, Van Dijk, or any other excellent player.

Lewa seems a great guy too. But still.

Tbf, even if Lewa wouldnt be one of the greatest players in this generation you can be still a die-hard fan of the player, many ppl associate me with Cristiano dos Santos Aveiro Ronaldo but im also a very very big Dybala fan, or Thiago and Özil 😬

I mean we have even die hard Puig fans here 🫣

Fair enough mate. Don't see anything wrong with it really. If someone loves Lewy, or Ronaldo, or Puig, more power to them.

Just for me I don't get attached to individual players like that. I have defended Messi a lot as a player but don't care about him as a person. Same with other players - I acknowledge their genius but also their massive flaws as people (like the man in my name and photo).

But as far as role models go, Lewy is a very good one it seems.

Is there no player you would love to meet and have a dinner? 🤔

Nah not one mate. They're all strangers to me and just entertainers. I don't see them as people I get an attachment to or bond with - they're just people in the stadium or TV.

Same with actors and stuff - usually when you meet these people it's a big let down - It's like that saying: 'never meet your idols/heroes'. I am sure I would get on well with some, but that's the same as anyone in any walk of life you meet.

Imo you get automatically a connection to a player when you enjoy his football game and you start to like him also as a person

i mean ofc if a player is a bad person then yeah you wont have him as role model

But most of the players are good persons from what i see, yeah they could be different in real life but i can only judge what i see

I understand. I just don't think about it like that. You do and fair enough, just a difference in mentality there.

I don't care about celebrities' personal lives either.

If I read some gossip, I'm like "ok that's cool" but immediately move on. I won't waste time thinking about it. Reading gossip/rumours is fun but that's where it ends.

Also, I'm the first one to criticise my favourites if they do something wrong on and off the pitch.

People know how much I admire Fati but I disagree with him on certain topics and express my disagreement without hesitation. I don't subscribe to the theory that friends must guarantee total obedience on all opinions like some nincompoops here do.
