Iniesta playing hard to get
Andrés Iniesta's contract renewal is not going to be a walk in the park. The Barça player is in no hurry to sign and has not yet accepted the initial offer made by Barcelona. It is not that he does not want to remain at the club, but rather that the offer does not meet his expectations.
A few days ago, the first and only meeting was held between the two parties. Barcelona made an offer to renew his contract until 2018, with the option to add on an additional year. In financial terms, the club wanted to place him just below Leo Messi on the squad's pay scale. This would see Iniesta earn €12 million gross per season plus incentives. The add-ons would be worth around €3 million more.
The player wants to take his time and wait for the club to improve its offer. He is not concerned about being the first, second or third highest paid player in the squad, as he told 'La Gradería' yesterday. What he wants is for his expectations to be met.
Talks are not deadlocked. 'Azulgrana' sources have confirmed that both parties are continuing to negotiate the matter, although they did not offer any more details on how the talks are proceeding. What is clear is that the club will have to improve on what they have already proposed.
Iniesta knows that this will be the final contract of his career, seeing his commitments to Barcelona come to an end at the age of 34. He wants to be valued the way that he deserves to be (something that has not always been the case), and he is tightening the screws.
