Antoine Griezmann

Are we confident about that now? Let's see.

Well, now I realized I sounded too confident; with this board you never know. But I think its more plausible we buy a high profile CM this summer because we won't be using that big money reserved for Griezmann.

Sent this to my father earlier. Excuse any grammatical errors as I was furious when I wrote it.

Tonight (June 14th 2018), I saw one of the most disgusting events take place right in front of my very own eyes regarding the future of Antoine Griezmann and the sport I adore.

Griezmann. An excellent player who I first saw play for Real Sociedad back in 2009-2010. Skinny, frail and lacking in any real footballing confidence at the time, he was but another name on another teamsheet, which Barcelona would smash twice a league season. I remember in one game, Messi did a series of 1-2s with Dani Alves from the half-way line, all the way to the Sociedad goal to score one of the best goals I'd seen at the time. Who was one of the players anxiously trying to stop Messi? Yes, it was Antoine Griezmann. That was as much as I knew about him.

However, a couple of years later, Griezmann had become the icon of a formidable Real Sociedad front line which also included ex-Arsenal man, Carlos Vela. They were lethal, and often a thorn in the back for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Griezmann's technical ability, decision making, agility and ability to finish were noteworthy, which is why in the Summer of 2012, a number of English clubs were in for him, including Manchester United and Arsenal. Sociedad had him come through their youth system, so he cost them relatively nothing. Griezmann stayed at Sociedad and went on to torture more La Liga defences until 2014.

Aletico Madrid came calling and snatched him for roughly £24m. How about that for a bargain by today's standards? Griezmann has since moved up a few levels, becoming the soft, paddling feet of a hardened defensive side. He's been their main outlet for 4 years and has scored a number of crucial goals and demonstrated his mental ability to deal with pressure at the highest of levels. One could argue that he and Atletico should have two Champions League trophies as Atletico were incredibly unlucky to concede a 90+ minute equaliser to Real Madrid first time around in 2014, and then lose on penalties the second time to the same opposition.

Yet, in the last 12 months, Atletico's nosebleeding level of performances have drifted away. The form of crucial players was not at the level they needed last season, including Gabi, Koke and Godin. Someway, somehow, they also did not have the same level of defensive invincibility that grew to frustrate almost every side that played against them. No space allowed between the lines, set pieces defended superbly, attention to every detail allotted. Yet, still a great footballing side on the counter attack when needed. This was the Atleti of Simeone's golden era where they went on to win La Liga in 2014 on the last day of the season. Combine all of the above with an early exit out of last seasons Champions League in the group stages and noises being made regarding financial instability and you have yourself this Summer's first big transfer saga. Griezmann to Barca?

Could it be? A welcome addition I might add from a Barcelona perspective. His dynamism around the box is something we are craving (as-well as midfield upgrades). Luis Suarez no longer possesses the legs he once did, and his lack of ball control has been a feature of criticism from the Barcelona faithful, causing numerous attacks to break down, even frustrating close friend Lionel Messi. Griezmann is an all-round attacker, he can play wide, centrally, and even as a #10. So, when 'good' sources claimed that Barca had all but officially announced his signature, things were looking good! Until tonight.

News broke that Griezmann had welcomed some form of Spanish TV Media channel into his life over the last 2 months to record him, 'making his tough decision.' They followed him home, they followed him into Atletico, they embedded into his personal life. This would be made into a documentary called, 'LaDecision.' (The Decision in Spanish). It seemed he wanted all the attention in the world on him as he reached his decision to either stay at Atletico or move to Barcelona. Could this news have been made up? I mean surely the guy isn't so vain? Worse still, Gerard Pique who owns a media company called 'Kosmos,' allowed his company to be the ones to film this documentary. Wait, that's not right, right? The whole of Twitter was sure this news was junk and more propaganda to sway opinions.

The seemingly vile video surfaced tonight. Myself and 1000s of Barcelona/Atletico fans watched the video. They HAD followed him since April, a month in which he was asked by Atletico to make his mind up. In one hilariously cringy scene, he is asked, ''have you made your decision?'' His reply was to go and play a video game. Every two seconds, the camera would pan to his face, as if trying to influence his decision one way or another. There was a scene where Griezmann's wife calls him (he puts her on speaker) and she says, ''Why would you go to Barcelona when they've won no Champions League trophy since 2015?'' It was an absolute mess of a show, which one could not begin to understand the purpose of it's existence.

Make a video of an extended transfer saga, put Atleti/Barca fans on the edge of their seats, then decide one way, winning over the fans of whatever said you've chosen, and leaving down the others? Attention is the word that comes to mind. The documentary showed a scene also where Griezmann's agent (his sister I believe) spoke about what Atletico/Barca were offering. Barca were offering less wages but told him, ''we want you win the Champions League with you.'' While Atleti were more forthcoming with the cash, offering to make him their highest paid player. (Ever?)

The end of the documentary neared, and a title appeared which suggested he was about to reveal everything. ''I want to let the people know, I am staying.'' Hurray! Well, if you're an Atletico fan at least, and maybe if you're a Barcelona fan too. Or maybe both sides should be disappointed. This documentary was one of the most disgraceful things I've ever seen a footballer do, praying on people's need for information, while satisfying his need for attention. Griezmann, by demonstrating an incredible lack of maturity and humility only acted to undermine not just Barcelona but Atletico by revealing personal details of his transfer on video and making it all seem a great laugh.

I would like to park my feelings towards Griezmann to focus on Gerard Pique for a second however. Mr. Barcelona has ALOT to answer for regarding this Kosmos affiliation and his Twitter activity, in which he tweeted that he was ''getting the popcorn for Griezmann's documentary.'' So Pique grants his media company the permission to record a documentary about Griezmann's transfer decision, yet in the documentary Griezmann stays at Atletico, undermining Pique's decision, yet, by releasing the documentary, Pique undermines Barcelona, at his own benefit? The guy isn't the smartest tool in the shed is he?

As a Barcelona fan, I would have been gutted if Griezmann had announced he was staying, the normal way, via a press conference or some formal media method. However, considering how he's behaved with this absolutely farcical and insidious documentary, I am absolutely glad he won't wear our shirt because as the saying goes - Més Que Un Club.

I don't think the board really has much of a plan, they just care about making big attacking signings to impress fans. That works to an extent but when an area of your squad is clearly lacking, the fans start wanting players who play in a position that's needed not just an 100 million striker every year.

We did not need Griezmann, i'm annoyed it got turned into a drama but i also don't trust that we'll invest that 100mil elsewhere and instead now go for a different attacker whilst our midfield remains bang average.

Yeah, I just can't wait to see that big name striker, Arthur, in action. He will bang in them goals!

Frenkie de Jong as well, if rumors are to be believed - deadliest big name striker duo of all time.

Made the right decision. Barca doesn't have any future under current management and with current philosophy.
Just like his wife told him, he would end up being just one more player around here.

Every year he negotiates with other clubs, teases fans on social media, makes a huge drama and then he signs a new contract at Atleti and is considered "loyal" for that.

Next CL final is at Atletico's ground....how sweet wouldn't it be to win it there if these piece of shits in the management and board could actually make some proper reinforcements.
