There is nothing wild about 3 man defence formations. In fact many teams are using them as their base formations now.

Barça teams of old changed to a 3 man defence on the fly depending on whether or not the opposition were playing with 2 or 3 forwards. If it was 2 one defender would move inside. You see it with Man City on occasion too with Delph.

That said, I don’t think Valverde has the balls to be so dynamic.

But the add-ons are joke add-ons, like playing 20 games and qualifying for the CL. You cant just ignore that they'll be paid next summer. We are still paying for the transfer of Digne, Paco etc when we pay in installments anyway. And wages for Coutinho, Dembele and Griezmann are far higher than Neymar alone. Wages for Griezmann alone is likely significantly higher than the transfer fee. Thats why he'll always play if we sign him. He'll get an insane wage given his bargaining power.

Not to necessarily discount what you said but remember when we won the treble Rakitic had a heavy defensive role on that side as Alves roamed.

yeah but alves still usually on big games didn't go so far up front and sticked to the LW, whereas rakitic was meant to follow the LB because messi wasn't.

The Spanish club will pay £4.5m at each 25-match interval to total that £18m= 2-3 seasons
£4.5m due if Barca qualify for 2018/19 Champions League= summer 2018
Another £4.5m if they qualify for the 19/20 Champions League= summer 2019
A further £4.5m for winning the Champions League in 18/19= Not easy
And £4.5m again if they win it in 19/20= Not easy

But the point is that whether we pay in installments or so-called "add-ons", its the same thing, the money will be paid. Large transfers are almost always paid in installments over several years anyway, even without any "add-ons".
