Barca 3–0 victory over Villarreal combined with Sevilla beating Real Madrid puts the Catalan team top of the table and three points ahead their rivals.
The 3–0 victory over Villarreal handed the Catalans three very huge points, allowing them to become the new leaders in the Spanish First Division. The win at Camp Nou, combined with Real Madrid's 3–2 defeat at the Sánchez Pizjuan in Sevilla later on Sunday evening broke what had been a first-place tie going into the weekend.
Though Real Madrid and Barça had been even on points at the top of the table, the Madrileños were technically ahead based on goal differential. But Real's first league defeat of the season on Sunday leaves them stuck on 24 points, while Barça's win and subsequent three points moves them into sole posession of first with 27.
Barça's current lead of three points over Real Madrid can be doubled to six with a triumph in the upcoming El Clásico, the next La Liga match for both teams, which is set for Saturday, 21 November at the Santiago Bernabéu in the Spanish capital. Kick off will be at 6.15pm CET.
FC Barcelona lead the league for the first time since falling at Celta Vigo back on match day five.
