Hey guys. I was wonder what you all considered to be the best World Cup of all time. 2002 and 2006 for me were awesome, 2002 maybe just for the unpredictability. Can you please vote for World Cup's you've actually witnessed.

1982 was my first WC and its prolly the shady, somehow romantic memories that make it the best for me. The match between Italy and Brazil (with Zico, Socrates, Falcao etc.), the penalty shootout in the semi vs France and the lost final vs Italy, where i won 5 DM from my Grandma (which was a shitload of money for a little boy like me ;)) b/c i bet on Italy to beat us (which was obvious to me as they kicked out Brazil) ...

2006 was also nice. I remember how crowded cologne was with swedish and english fans during their group match, and i remember how everyone and his little sister was on the streets after our victory over argentina. But it was already getting a bit too much for me, straying away from the sports to some party event.

2002 on the contrary was by far the worst WC ever. I actually never felt like there was a WC due to the sick kick off times. Getting up at 9am to watch a fricking 1/4 final ... useless. You never were able to watch football in the evenings, sitting outside with a beer. I hope FIFA learned from that ...

I always thought that Italia 90 was by far the worst and I was tempted to put Mexico 70 in it's place.

the amount of classic games were unbelievable and never repeated before or after ...

England-France , Brazil - Italia,Brazil-Argentina,Italia-Argentina,Algeria-Germany , Germany-Italia, France-Germany, Spain-England,Germany-England,Spain-Germany, Poland-Italy,Poland-France

super stars :
Zico,Scorates,Maradona,Tardelli,Conti,Paolo Rossi,Passarella,Junior,Eder,Falcao,Kempes,Michel Platini,Rummenigge,Littbarski,Breitner,Harald Schumaker, Tigana,Giresse,Zoff,Fillol,Kevin Keegan,Boniek,Madjer,Hrubesh,Ardiles,Bryan Robson,Trevor Francis,Six,Dalglish,Souness,Blokhin,Ramon Diaz,Krankl ,Roger Milla,Baresi,Bergomi,Gentile,Altobeli ,Prohaska,Valdano,Tarantini,Pfaff,Gerets,Magico Gonzalez,Hoddle,Wilkins,Shilton,Butcher,Camacho,Santilana ..etc
believe it or not .. that's just on top of my head.. i write a name and others names pop up

there isn't a single World cup that had such a long list of super stars or the amount of classic games ...

there is no competition with World cup 1982 through out the history of the WC

all the other World cups had it's boring element .. this one is different very different in everything

i beleive adolfo valencia was in that wc too el tren?

Nah, he played in 94, where he even scored twice iirc, so Atletico was willing to buy him from Bayern (for more that they got him for!). I think he participated in 98 as well, but w/out any noticeable contribution as far as i remember.

Hm ... i guess 94 wasnt to bad either ;) Oh wait ... it was in the US ... silly spectators and horrible football from our nation (thank you very very much Berti Vogts) ... forget about what i said ... ;)

For me it is Italia 90. Even though I agree with everything Gio said I was only 1 at the time thus I cannot count it. I remember 1986 well but it was 1990 when I really understood what the world cup meant and though it was most boring to the eye in most matches I've always liked Italia 90 for some reason.

Maybe it was because it was the last world cup before the new marketable era set in or new technology. Italia 90 was the last of its kind before all the razz matazz we see now.

Plus I was 9 at the time so I remember watching most games. Argentina-Cameroon and seeing the africans assaulting maradona made me laugh. Roger Milla was about 60 but performed like he was 18.

Taking away the boring matches there was Italy-Argentina, Germany-England, Germany-Holland, Germany-Yugoslavia, Brazil-Argentina, Spain-Yugoslavia, England-Cameroon which was imo the match of the tournament. Plus we saw underdogs like Costa Rica and Ireland go at it.

Plus we saw upcoming players for the future at this world cup. Baggio, Donadoni, Ferrara, Vialli, Maldini, Caniggia, Klinsmann, Kohler, Riedle, Haessler, Savicevic, stojkovic, Pancev, Boksic, Gascoigne, Barnes, Platt, Guillet, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Koeman.

Plus the atmosphere between the fans and players (final apart) was good. Germany ran riot in the group stages. England, Ireland and Holland were in the same group and the dutch drew the short straw and had to play the germans in the second round. Everyone remembers THAT spit and Klinsmann's wonder goal. Germany were definitely determined to win it after 2 runners up in 82 and 86 and imo the best player of the tournament Matthaus lead them to victory.

We had Brazil-Argentina in the 2nd round where a piece of Maradona magic saw Caniggia get the winner.

Plus the 2 penalty shoot outs in the semis to add to the drama.

from my lifetime that I was fully aware of... '98 was my favourite. it was't the most classic and the final still rankles with me to this day but france's run to the final was spectacular and it cemented thuram as one of my favourite players. ronaldo was amazing for the whole tournament too.

2002 was equal parts amazing and awful. brazil's run, with ronaldo's vengeance, rivaldo's awesome and ronaldinho's emergence, was magnificent stuff. but then you had south korea screwing spain and italy, which was horrendous.

going by all-time, '54 or '58 look like the best world cups by far. attacking, loads of goals, great players, awesome epic matches. I mean I didn't see either, so can't name them as my #1, but I reckon I would if I had.

From 94 I remember only one thing, when Baggio lost the penalty. So 98 was my first WC where I understood what football really is. At those times I hated France(Blamne Chirac or whatever his name is. ) but wasn't a fan of Brazil either, I was cheering for Croatia though. 2002 was stupid like El Tren said with all those early hour games, I hardly watched 2006 so I'd say 1998 for me.
