What is the biggest derby in football ?

I don't think many of you will be surprised ,as a Scot, to see that I think the Old Firm is the biggest derby in the world. I don't think you all realise who big this derby is in a non-football sense as well as a football.

It regularly decides the title in the SPL as they swap the tile every year or so.

But the main reason is the non- football. Protestant vs Catholic. British vs Irish. Unionist & loyalist vs Republican & Nationalist.

But lets see what you guys think.

Bojan, do you have footage of the last Hajduk - Dinamo game @ Poljud, the crazy one?

that would be amazing if these guys could see that..

El Clásico, it has eveything. Two of the biggest clubs in the world which the Old Firm can't match, a political significance that is probably unmatched in world football and an intense rivalry. Other derbies may be better for atmosphere or provide more violence but Barça - Madrid is the biggest match in the football calendar barring the CL final.

Definitly the biggest, but I wouldnt say the most intense. some real crazy derbies out there.

The biggest by far is the Classico, but it hasn't really been very "intense" since the Figo saga.

Seville derby is missing and the atomosphere for that one is huge. Old Firm has a great history, but it's the Scotish league so no one really cares outside Glasgow.

Istanbul derby seems pretty fierce as does the River - Boca, but it has to be the Classico, due to the history and status of the two teams.

El Classico, the history of it for me puts it above even the Old Firm, plus as was said before, Nobody really gives a shit about Scottish Football anymore. There hasnt been the passion in El Classico for the last few years, this year it will be extremely interesting, anyone know when the first one is? This year, especially in the first one, Madrid's behaviour was disgusting. They kicked Messi for the first 20 minutes, I was amazed that none of them were redcarded to be honest. Maybe thats an example of passion, though I'd just call it being a bunch of cheats. But yeh, El Classico, nothing can compare in history to that match. I think naturally people on here will be biased towards voting for El Classico because so many of us are Barca fans, its normal.

Shame its not an earlier date, if we played them in October or September then I have almost no doubt we'd win, they're going to need time to adjust as a team....the amount of time that takes will be crucial. If Real Madrid havent got themselves together as a team by that date then really we should completely own them.....=] biased but oh well.

That's only because Ireland has no significant football of its own and sees Celtic as a pseudo-national team. The population of the ROI and NI combined is less than Catalunya.

with all due respect to El Clasico, and its history, I think there is something AS significant, if not more, as there was actual war and the bloodbath was basically started on a football pitch when Croatian national team player Zvonimir Boban jumped and kicked a Serbian police officer on the pitch. It was the start of the hell, the symbolic meaning was endless..
It was actually a political event.. So, for me.. The animosity between Dinamo - Hajduk (wich is still enormous) isn't even compared with the feeling of national belongance when some of those clubs face Serbian big clubs (Partizan and Red Star Belgrade) wich is huuuge.
Nowadays, things have chilled a bit due to the fact these clubs don't meet anymore..

I assure you, if say, Crvena Zvezda and Dinamo Zagreb were to meet in the UEFA League, that match would be marked as the biggest risk event there is..
