Brilliant start for VAR this weekend. Way better system than FIFA had during the Confed Cup

• On Friday, Bayern got a penalty correctly given that gave them the temporary 3-0 lead in a game that ended 3-1. Correct call, little time loss, ultimately didn't really effect the outcome. The only question here is what to do if the ball didn't go out of bounds as quickly but rather play had continued for a while.
• On Saturday, the offside line didn't work because the equipment provided by Sony wasn't functional. Important because Bartra scored the 2-0 for Dortmund in their win over Wolfsburg with a magnificent bender in the top corner. It appeared he was offside from the first images, but the ref could not review this as the system wasn't working. TV images later showed Bartra was onside to begin with.
• Hertha vs Stuttgart, the referee didn't call a foul on the edge of the box. The VAR reviewed it and not only correctly called the foul but also correctly called it freekick and not penalty, a rather difficult decision to make even with TV images. Time delay was there but not significant.
• On Sunday, the (so far) most important VAR usage as it decided the outcome of the game. Freiburg scored in their home game against Frankfurt but the VAR called an offside in the build up and correctly disallowed the goal. Instead of taking a 1-0 lead the game remaiend 0-0, which was also the final score of the game.
• Gladbach vs Köln, Rheinderby - the eventual 1-0 winner had a close offside situation that was called onside. VAR confirms that it indeed was onside, so nothing changes but reaffirming the correct call.

Also interesting:

• Hoffenheim had a shot on the crossbar that bounced right down onto the line, but hawk eye didn't see it crossing the line. Goal not given, correctly, as was easily to see off the TV images. Interesting here is that the argument was kept short after the ref simply pointed on his wristband indicating that there's nothing to argue about with goal line tech not recognizing it.

All in all great impact, little time loss.

wasn't an issue though, the problem with offside came from Sonys cameras. VAR itself was very good. The overall performance was also not labelled inacceptable by DFL, just the offside issue was. But it wasn't needed so they dodged that problem and everything else worked. Generally it was an absolute improvement to the game.

The DFL happens to disagree with your assessment. Saw their representative on Sky. He was pissed off to no end.

They have to, it's their mistake and they'll have to look bothered when it comes to fixing it.
Even with offside cams partially out of order I found nothing but overall improvement. Rarely enjoyed a matchday without major referee mistakes.
