The current situation still feels surreal. In the summer, Madrid added Mbappe to their CL and LaLiga winning squad, while we still drowned in debt, LaLiga restrictions and Laporta fired Xavi. Madrid fans wrote it's their period of domination now, Barca is in ruins.
A few months further, we're rolling over each opponent, Bayern and Madrid among others, have the 2nd most goals in our history so far, while Madrid looks like Getafe. Not forgetting the Ballon D'Or shame. Enjoy this right now, who knows how long it'll last

I don't think it works like that.

If you finish 1st or 8th, you go into the random pot. Equally, 9th doesn't play 24th, 10th doesn't play 23rd etc, it's a random draw between the segments.

Open to being corrected if I am wrong, though.

You are correct. Top 8 just basically prevents you from going into the play off round before the ro16. Rest of them get randomly drawn into a play off. This time teams from the same country can face each other earlier.

That's weird. On wikipedia (yes I know, but it is generally right) it says there will be a draw for the knockout play-offs, then the round of 16.

I tend to be very into formats and permutations so I figured I knew this well, but...

It's pretty unclear though.
