ah yes , better than paulinho for being better in 20 mins or however much he's played in against sevilla

What the hell are we supposed to judge him by then, when he's not playing more than that? Just look at him play. It's so clear that he's able to offer things offensively that Paulinho simply can't as a player.

Paulinho really is shockingly bad in terms of the main responsibility that falls to a midfielder. Stuff like making himself available, providing relief for a teammate under pressure, playing a constructive pass. I think regularly, 5 or 10 minutes go by in games where he doesn't even touch the ball.

I'm not saying that Denis is world-class at that stuff, (and how could you even expect him to when he plays so little), but it's so clear that he actually wants the ball. He might get bullied off the ball if he gets it in challenging circumstances, but that's because he actually dares to make himself available in those situations. With Paulinho, there isn't even the option to play him.

Based on his whole career as a barca player rather than 20 mins against Sevilla ? There's a reason why he's being droped out of the team you know ?

you're only as good as your last 20 mins don't ya know. The coach is hit with the MiB memory erasers as soon as he posts the teamsheet for the next game

lol

no he doesn't.

Paulinho adds something to this, D.Suarez, not much. He is too weak and slow on the ball. Needs to improve a lot before he should even play for Barca.

I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you. I want to be specified on what his role exactly is. He can't intercept passes like Rakitic, Roberto and Busquets. He can't break the lines by forward movement like Roberto. He can't tackle like Rakitic. He can't be involved in build up play. He can't dribble. Why can not coutinho and Alcacer be started instead?

Yes, agreed.

Paulinho's best roles, for me at least, were vs. Real and vs. Chelsea in which he was a sub. If he's fresh and all the other players are in form, he can start but I see him as a sub. He pocketed Willian.

He's good when we need some legs in the midfield. The Chelsea game was a joke as Iniesta and Busquets weren't fit and we were just getting walked through. The subs helped that.

When Paulinho and similar players won't be here, you'll understand then what was their role.
Results will be way different longterm.

You might be correct. I just am willing to know what is the specific difference Paulinho make in Valverde's tactic. So that, it might not be so unpleasant for me to watch barca play when he's in midfield.

I'll try my best. In Valverde's team he's been used in various positions. Playing deep, on the side (usually right) and behind the strikers, many times in the absence of other suitable players.
For my part, he's best suited to play behind the strikers. What he offers is, I'd say, physical presence. If he is fresh and can run, he will mark a player or will play high upfront disturbing the defense, we saw it vs. Real. It was crucial. Also, the way he pocketed Willian and disrupted Chelsea attacking play was impressive. Since he's tired (or not in form), you can't expect him to do it for 90 minutes, which sucks.
But the midfield suffers when he's on. That is true. If you want to utilize him most, you need to give him somewhat of a free role behind the strikers. He has some qualities. Behind physical presence, there's gift to find himself in good positions to score or his runs in the box.... hope we'll see more of December 2017 Paulinho.

He won't make our midfield stronger, but tougher. That's what he offers. But for that, you need strong midfield. Or at least stronger than the last night's one. Cheers.

Second leg cameo is what I'm talking about. Was very poor in the 1st leg, as he usually is when starts the match.

I'll watch the second leg then

These are the statements which are a portion of a post I posted in Dembele thread.

Paulinho has Zero positioning. To be precise, Paulinho was not expected to be a positional player. He is a floating shadow striker. That's what I could understand watching him. Also, he is an additional number for attack as well as defense.
