Here is a classic way to get out of it ... go to the dinner, five minutes after you are seated, pretend you have recieved a phone call. Sound very worried and all of a sudden panic and say frantically "I'm on my way !!!!" and get up and leave ....

If they ask you what happened the next day say it was personal.
