Emiliano Martínez 'Dibu'

If we were willing to pay 80m or so, he would definitely come and I don't think Aston Villa would hold him against his will.

But we don't value the goalkeeper position enough to pay 80m for one and make him essentially our gala signing of next season.

If Mats had 1% of his balls we would have at least 1 CL more and 10 humiliation in CL less.
And if we'd had someone like him in last ten years, probably 5 CLs more. Never thought shitty overrated "barca dna" GK could be such a huge downgrader, but here we are and starting to understand. Fat chance the management of FC Farca does.

Sounds like a joke, but it's real - FIFA has banned Dibu for two games for "bad behaviour" against Chile and Colombia.

Probably let in more poor goals already this season than he did all of last.

Hard to criticise him because he's been great for us but he needs to pick it up a bit.

Hot take. He is only world class for Argentina. In league football he is nowhere near as good.

One of those Argentines who ramps up the effort, intensity and concentration levels because of the passion of playing for his country.

Have thought the same myself. He seems very VERY patriotic. I am sure he has a lot of affection for Villa but it's more of a job for him there, and they're not really likely to win the league. He plays well for them, but for Argentina he's playing with passion, fire and love, and consequently he's in the conversation for best performing NT goalkeeper in the world - you can't say that about him at club level for Villa.

Of course, it could just be that Argentina are higher in the international game than Villa are the club game. But a good chunk of that with Argentina is because of him.

He's like a 7.5-8 for Villa and a 9.5 for Argentina.

Other examples, might be wrong on some but just impression I get:

De Paul, Paredes, Lisandro Martinez, Enzo, (finding his feet a bit at Chelsea now), Molina, Acuna, Montiel. Might be more.

These Argentines are very in love with their country and clearly try harder there. Or at least the international game is a lower standard so it's SOMETIMES easier for lesser players to shine in it.

I think Messi is a big factor. They all love him and wanted to win the World Cup for him as much as for the country. They were playing for him so much. It increases their motivation and willpower. They're professional with their clubs but don't have the same drive, chiefly because many of them don't play with realistic contenders for big trophies as Argentina are.

He probably plays better for Argentina, but to say he is nowhere near as good is a disservice to him.

He played a key role in winning Arsenal their last major trophy, getting Aston Villa to a Champions League spot after god knows for how long and equaling the club's record of most clean sheets in his first season.

Team chemistry is definitely much better in the Arg. national team.

The players are more like brothers who fight for one another. They even go to vacation together after the season ends.

Indeed

As for your previous post, yeah he's pretty good at club level. Just not the monster he is for the NT. As I say 8 vs 9.5

To be fair it was his Villa form that got him the call initially.

He was that good that I remember arguing with someone in the Stegen thread that he would help Messi win his first international trophy and so it proved.

Last year he was fantastic, of course he made mistakes as any keeper does but was generally brilliant.

First several games of this season he’s been shit. Although the second half of yesterday’s game, he did have his best 45 of the season.
