He did nothing to renew this team or build for the future because he had no mandate to and was operating under a strict set of restrictions. He was one match away from an invincible league campaign in his first season and one away goal from an almost certain CL title. Third season it fell apart, but how many coaches at the top level in football today even with a functioning board are able to maintain success for more than two seasons?

An "actual strong coach" would have been sacked withing two months after the dressing room turned against him for upsetting the natural order. Few amigos would have complained to the board and that would be the end of it. The new signings he was given were mental midgets (Coutinho, Semedo), cripples (Dembele, Arthur) or simply not good enough (Malcom, Mina etc).

Never suggested he was some genius, but he did a decent job and the way he was treated by our fans was an absolute disgrace. Never seen such an entitled group of supporters so viciously trash a man despite being one of the winningest coaches in club history.

Glad you and some other posters seem to be coming around and admitting he is not the worst manager in the world.

I don't see how him being a doormat is somehow something positive compared to someone who wouldn't allow that to happen to him. Of course there is a fine line between having a strong will and being too full of himself like Bielsa but still i don't think an elite coach should be okay with keeping his job no matter how the board/players push him around. That kind of weak mentality will never end well for the team. Valverde isn't the worst coach in the world and never was (same for Setien) but for Barcas standards = absolute elite he will always just be mediocre and not the main reason for success. That his main trait was not upsetting the amigos so they could do their thing says enough. If he was a Barca player he'd be Sergi Roberto, average as hell but somehow good/liked enough to be kept

Anyway, let's just agree to disagree.

25 years down the road some people will credit the vaccine for COVID , 4 day work weeks and world peace to Valverde.

Did Setien get death threats from our fans?

Did Setien have the title of his thread changed to a derogatory nickname?

Did Setien invoke the same foaming at the mouth reaction to his sterile football despite not producing results either?

Was Setien blamed by our fans as the main culprit for this year's CL humiliation?

Was Setien blamed for not being able to turn the likes of Arthur, Semedo and Todibo into worldbeaters?

Was Setien ridiculed for not doing enough with a "top 3 squad in the world?"

Valverde got the brunt of all the above and much more.

Made the post dawg, hope more people can see the light

I've yet to see this sort of comparison on a RM forum about whether Benitez or Lope was worse. Or whether Lope or Scolari were worse.

Neither are Bayern fans obsessed with whether Kovac or Ancelotti were worse.

Also, Tackle. The "winningest" thing is bullshit. He did fuck all in the CL, which is the competition that by some distance, is the most important one.

At the end of the day, both EV and Setien are absolutely dire. One was just more palatable (EV) in his mannerisms so it gave the impression he was a gentleman. He's the one who enabled the Club De Amigos even if Setien turned out to be more clueless tactically. Hard pass on both of these clowns.

In the age of social media, instant gratification and the past decade of us dominating the league has deluded fans into believing you need the CL to have a great season. That isn't the case though and CL is borderline impossible to win. Many great players and managers have gone their entire career without winning it. This idea that Valverde is some failure for not winning that competition is ludicrous. He did well getting those dead legs to their first SF in 3 seasons. SAF coached United for 26 years and won "only" two European cups. His second win came 9 years after his first. If you win the league in Spain or England you had a good season, end of.

Benitez, Lope and Scolari? Come on mate, neither of them lot touched a single major trophy in their time with Madrid. Valverde left with 3 in 2.5 seasons. The Bundesliga is the very definition of a one horse race league like Ligue 1. There comes no gratification from winning the title for Bayern after a while because they do no have a similar size foe like we do in Madrid. Their biggest rival is a feeder club (Dortmund).

Valverde was not some revolutionary, but you are not making much of a case for yourself when you lump him with the likes of Lope, Scolari, Setien etc. Have some perspective.

We basically dont care about Benitez, Lope or Solari, i just feel indifferent, much like you guys dont care about Tata or Setien either.

Valverde though, must be the only coach who is hated for winning things.

Tata and Setien fucked off after it became clear they were trash. Valverde, on the other hand, it seemed we would never be rid of.

Tata and Setien didn't win anything.

Valverde won our only 2 La ligas in the last 4 years.
In which universe he has anything in common with Tata and Setien?

that mainly because barca has an international following that is more vocal, on social media, than the locals are. people that are not living in england, spain or italy understand the title comes 1st in the big leagues. CL is just the cherry on top. i would wager that is the case also for france and germany, for the teams that are not psg or bayern.

To be fair, Tata should have won the La Liga. But he didn't so anyway..

In the universe in which no other team came even close to challenging both in 2018 and 2019.
It's simple as that.
But Ernie apologists cannot see reality straight.

I said in the other thread that he is not the main man responsible for the current state of affairs.
But, enough with revisionism and whitewashing Valverde
