Southgate lacks the winning mentality and tactical nous to get over the line and many of the players are overrated by the media and don't make the difference when needed. Many of these are system players that only look good in their well oiled club sides under world class managers.

It was only Jurgen Klopp and that was a different system. He started as an RB and moved into midfield. Very different tactically. Southgate doesn't have the nous to pull off these inventive things.
