European Super League

Let's say everything about the ESL stays the same but they remove that founder status (which I think is pure BS as well) would you take it ?

Actually the opposite. I wouldn't mind it if there were 20 teams who were guaranteed their place every season and this league was completely separate from the football pyramid.

Expanding the European competitions and funneling all the money to the teams that play in it is what is making the domestic leagues boring. The Champions league needs to go back to what it was. The old European cup where the champions of Europe play in a knockout. Each club would only play a maximum of 4 or 5 rounds so the money wouldn't completely distort the domestic game.

City won't pull out lol.

The prospect of having Manchester Derbies in Abu Dhabi and other parts of the Middle East will be a dream of the Sheikhs.

It's borderline terrifying how much money they could make by hosting those matches.

The Sheikhs are definitely in on this. Publically against this but we know it's all under the table in private. The fact anyone is cheering on Man City or PSG for their stances is laughable knowing their histories.

UEFA pay forward a lot of solidarity money to smaller clubs around Europe. Something that will stop with this Super League.

Good!
I, and many other people like and approve of that.

Again:
How is that money generated?
TV rights?
Why big broadcast paying to buy UCL?
To see Ferencvaros and Astana? No
Rather to see Barca to play against City, PSG, and Bayern.
Big clubs is the cow that generates money, and UEFA is administering that money.

What Perez and the others are saying now to UEFA is "you are administering the money we generate, and you use it for solidarity purposes.
But we want more money, we want to cover our debts, we want all of it for us."

Then Florentino need to come forward and openly admit he believes football is a sport for the elites and that they are willing to let those clubs go bankrupt and die.

If they want to cover their debts they should think twice before spending 140m on a 29 year old Eden Hazard with one year left on his contract. Perhaps Barca should think twice before spending 130m on Griezmann and 160m on Coutinho.

The only thing pandemic exposed is how bad both clubs are structured where they keep borrowing money or pushing it down the road to keep funding huge transfers, agent fees and other crap that ultimately backfire.

There's a lot of people on this forum who I see support and cheer for their local teams as well, and get happy when they get far into the CL or EL and are able to meet some top teams.

That will stop. Your teams are going to die. There's no two ways about this.

Florentino says that children are losing interest in football.

Why is that? Could it be because of the bad timings such as playing games as late as 9pm or 10pm? Could it be that almost every single game is behind a paywall that costs literally 100+ euros/pounds per month in some countries to watch?

I think it's quite the opposite. Local teams are doing fine.
Big clubs have starting to become more like big investment companies, no one really cares what the true supporters say. See Liverpool
But be aware. Those chinese and indonesia "fans" are very easily becoming "fans" of another team because it has better and shiniest players.
In the future? Who know maybe we see Liverpool Trotters or Barcelona Giants with shows all over the world and fancy fans all around.

Are you a Barcelona fan?

Are you from Barcelona?

If the answer to the first is yes and the second is no, then you don't have much ground to stand on with this outrage. And frankly it makes you a hypocrite. What makes you a real fan in this case as opposed to someone in Shanghai. Maybe have a look in the mirror.

Well as I said.. Watch out who your real fans are..

Agree with Yannik's take on it from an ethical point of view,
but harsh reality says other things: football has become entertainment looong ago, and it's inevitably to succumb to the laws that govern all business that produce entertainment.

And tbf football is an important aspect of my free time/hobbies in life.
But if I decide to revolt against the ills of capitalism, I would rather start from realms that are more 'real life' than football.

We should also be honest with ourselves. It's not only the newbies in football that want the big matches
Just ask yourselves how motivated and interested you are in watching Ferencvaros - Barca for the CL rather than PSG - Barca.

The question is who has the power to do what.
Let's assume UEFA moves on and bans the SL clubs from its competitions.
Let's assume Domestic leagues do the same.
Let's assume players are NOT allowed to play Euros and World Cup.

Then, look at what's left:
a CL without the best teams, where the final would be a Lazio - Villareal (Europa League level)
Domestic leagues where Valencia and Betis will fight for LaLiga every year
Euros and World Cups where France would feature an XI without Mbape, Griezman, Dembele, Pogba, Kante etc etc

Who is the winner? UEFA and FIFA? Domesti Leagues? Probably Not.
Or it's rather the opposite?
Fans will care only about the ESL, and the rest of the competitions will deteriorate into indifference and oblivion?

Plus, the financial aspect:
What will happen to tv rights and income for these competitions when declined that much? Will it go up or down?

As much as I hate this motherfucker Perez,
he knows what he is doing. He knows very well that big clubs have power in their hands

You are probably right but those clubs still have millions of domestic fans. Fans who live in and around those clubs who aren't going to start supporting one of the teams in the Super League. They will instead find themselves in a league where they now have a chance of winning where money isn't so much the deciding factor. Will it be as marketable to the world wide fan. Probably not. Is that a bad thing. Probably not. The lesser domestic level clubs themselves will probably make even more money developing players for these super leagues as they will be banned from loaning players or being involved at any level with the domestic leagues.

I probably agree FIFA will come to some agreement but it's going to have to be a long term agreement made at the start before any player is allowed to play in the next World Cup and I doubt that's going to happen. I think the Super League clubs will hold out to see what the situation is after the next world cup. Will FIFA cave at that point or will the players even start to think twice about joining those clubs in the first place.

This I think would be a gigantic step forward not for English, but European football in general. How do you expect this to go forward though since the PL is already fully infiltrated by club owners and not only the top 6?

If the clubs who already have owners are not affected, then what will eventually happen is that there will be a massive backlash like with FFP where people from the lower divs think that their clubs are disadvantaged because they cant get an owner, but ManCity/Chelsea/Newcastle etc get to keep theirs and have financial advantage. There needs to be a solution for ALL clubs in England to be subjected to this, and no exceptions for those that already have corporate/private owners.

Doesnt look like he is :boss:

katzik, you never answered me, mate.

I know the feeling mate...

Which is why the arguments about UEFA being just as bad is stupid.

UEFA pay forward a lot of solidarity money to smaller clubs around Europe. Something that will stop with this Super League. A closed format is not competitive, it is against the integrity of competition.

That's not to say UEFA isn't bad and doesn't have to change. They do. They have shit the bed which made this a possibility, but the whataboutism is embarrassing.

Florentino made one thing very clear last night. They don't give a damn about anyone else but themselves. The pandemic is not the reason Barca, Real Madrid and Juventus are struggling. Piss poor management and bad investments are.

These clubs won't die by 2024.

That said, the CL format should be changed, so should the revenue sharing and they should open up for more invention rather than sticking to their traditional ways.

1000% agree !
