He was purchased by Hamburg already for the season 2012/13, but were allowed to remain and develop in Karlsruhe where he scored 17 goals and over 10 assists as a second striker. Last year, he played for Turkey during FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey and was their best offensive player. During the season 2013/14. Çalhanoğlu began the season on the bench for Hamburg but took a starting place after some impressive appearances. Since that, he was one of the few bright spots in a chaotic Hamburg when they succeeded in the very last retained their status as a Bundeliga-club when they won against Gruether Fuerth in a relegation-match.
How is Calhanoglu when compared to other promising offensive players in his age category? Very good I would say. It's not overly many players in his age who is ahead of him in development. Still inexperienced at a lot of points, but I still see a lot of potential in him. Çalhanoğlu has now made the role of playmaker in the starting position behind the striker in Leverkusen but the turk can also play on the left wing (like he did in Hamburg) and he will only get better over time.
So far, he has done an okay start to the season for Leverkusen, however, is probably only a matter of time before he plays in a bigger club, but for his personal development, it may be good enough to be around for a few seasons in Leverkusen. How big club is hard to say, as he still feels slightly green but he is without doubt an interesting talent.
