I understand that. That's mostly on Lucho, but I still expect some class from our midfielders.
And even in some good games he was average. Yes, he's doing a whole lot of defending, but we need to move the game forward and he fails in that segment.

I thought the Barcaforum consesus was that Lucho is unfair on Rakitic by benching him for Denis and Gomes

All Rakitic does now is to play as a rb. He's always defending, going up and down, too wide. Gomes' positioning was even weirder. No player is doing well there lately. Too many players underperforming at once, which points to the problem being something else.

I think it's unfair to Rakitić to look at things this way if you don't also consider who our opponents were when we played those few good matches in December and how those opponents played against us. None of Gladbach or Espanyol were high pressing like crazy as Bilbao did yesterday in 1st half. We had problems against this type of teams even in the past when we were better equipped to play against those teams so yesterday's struggles didn't surprise me at all.

I'm not defending Rakitić. He was bad as was the rest of the team, especially in 1st half. But would we really look like we did against let's say (unmotivated) Gladbach if Denis or Gomes would start yesterday in his place? I don't think so. I still like both of their longterm potential but right now they are not difference makers in our midfield. And to be fair, "system" we play makes it really hard for any midfielder to really be that. It worked in treble season because MSN was on fire in second half of the season, this season only Messi is close to his level while Ney and Suarez are way below that so we can't find the same kind of success. I'm still optimistic that we can turn this season around but some things will have to change drastically.

Also, it's impossible to blame just one or two players if whole team is playing bad. We would be extremely lucky and not concerned now if our biggest problem would be that only Rakitić or only Suarez or only Neymar were in bad form (I won't mention Messi here because his form has the biggest influence on team). If 8 or 9 players are playing close to their level we have enough quality to get away with one or two players performing bad in most matches. But if 8 or 9 players are playing way below their level then we can only hope that Messi will have one of his moment of genius and save us. That's the position we were in yesterday and also in most matches this season.

I agree we're poor with him, but we played poor with Denis and Gomes too, it was Iniesta coming back which made those two look better in some games. Plus Bilbao are beasts at home.. not the easiest game to come back in no-one performed well and i'm sure Denis and Gomes would have done no better.

Love Rakitic, but he has really struggled. He was awful yesterday and it didn't help that Iniesta and Busi were also trash. Performance was just so disappointing to watch

We should try him as RB and play Denis in his position, it basically would be just formality because he is already playing as RB.
