I honestly don’t understand why you’re so critical of him. Especially in the midst of a spectacular season:
- First, you continually fall back on his fee, which he’s already justified via winning the WC in historic fashion and thereby becoming one of the worlds most recognizable(marketable) players.
- Speaking of recognizable players, iconic mega stars like Neymar and Kylian give legitimacy to Ligue 1 and PSG. They put butts in seats, they grow the PSG brand and supporter base, and they attract sponsors and broadcasters. The latter of which has culminated in an historic domestic broadcasting deal with Media Pro, which will lift all of Ligue 1. You’ll also notice that PSG has established lucrative relationships with globally recognizable brands like Jordan & Babe. A direct result of signing some of the worlds biggest stars.
- You’re comparing his form this season to his form last season absent of any context. Last year he played mostly on the RW in an unbalanced 4-3-3 that was disproportionately reliant on he and Neymar’s individual brilliance. So while he had more time and space on the ball isolated on the right, he was ultimately less effective and less effeicient because there was too much space between he and the ST, whom he didn’t share a strong cohesion with. While Neymar, whom he shared a connection with, was stuck on the opposite wing, making it impossible for them to play off one another.
This season, under Tuchel, the tactical set up has been far more flexible, and he’s no longer spending most of his time on the RW. Instead, Tuchel has moved him closer to the middle in an effort to bring greater proximity to Neymar, who has moved from the LW to a creative #10 role behind the ST’s. With Neymar playing behind Kylian & Cavani, the three have developed an impressive chemistry only shared by the very best forward lines. The inter-play between Neymar and Kylian specifically has been nothing short of special, and you’ll note that both his goal scoring and assist records are far stronger this season than last.
- The above tactical set up has allowed PSG to get off to an historic start in Ligue 1, while also topping the toughest of the UCL groups.
- This isn’t just for you, but for everyone: Stop comparing Kylian to great players that came before him. He isn’t O Fenômeno, or Messi, or Ronaldo. He isn’t even Henry, nor does he have to be in order to be fairly recognized as a great player, so let’s stop analyzing him through the lenses of those names and how they played. He doesn’t have to carry their traits, or have the exact same skills to be great. Let him be Kylian Mbappé.
