So, we have arrived on the final day of the Primera season.
Places 1 and 2 have already been decided, so the only interesting bit about Barca and Real this weekend, is how ludicrous will Ronaldo's pursuit of a few more goals be? They are playing Getafe at home, which is great news for CR7 and his fanbois.
Lower down the table, we have lots of interesting battles. Atletico are still unsure of a 3rd place finish (which is important for next season's CL of course) They need to secure at least a point against Granada away. Granada are desperate for points as well as they are only two point above relegation places and could potentially be overtaken by Eibar (who play already relegated Cordoba) and Almeria who play Valencia. Valencia have to win away against Almeria so as to make sure that the last CL spot belongs to them. Otherwise, they may very well be overtaken by Sevilla who also play away against Malaga. To my knowledge, Malaga have nothing to play for, since the last EL spot must belong to Bilbao who will be at least CdR finalists (this is what happened in 2009 at least)
As for Sevilla, on the one hand, they will definitely be hoping to win against Malaga while Valencia fail to do so at Almeria, something that will guarantee them 4th place. At the same time, they have an EL final coming up on Wednesday night in Warsaw. The temptation will be for them to rest some of their key player and go all out to win against Dnipro. An EL victory will not only mean that they become the most successful club across Europe in the competition, but also that they qualify for the CL group stage directly, which will not be the case if they finish 4th in the league and lose the EL final.
As for the relegation battle, Eibar still have hopes of avoiding the drop. They play at home against already relegated Cordoba, while Deportivo and Granada (the two clubs directly above them) have tough games against Atletico and Barcelona. For Eibar, a win against Cordoba, and a defeat for anyone of Deportivo or Granada means salvation.
As charming as they are, I want Eibar to go down, as they have no place in the Primera. I have also been expecting Getafe to go down for years now, but they always seem to find that extra victory to keep in the first division.
Almeria are also in deep trouble and are likely to be relegated since they require a victory against Valencia at all costs. They may even win and still be relegated if other results do not go their way. This is strange to me since whenever I have seen them play, they looked comfortably mid-table. There is also the prospect of them having three points deducted by a court.
