First time ever, both Messi and Ronaldo are not nominated for the Ballon D'or.

The 2 best players of this generation and an end of an era.

Just received an email with a link to this article. I am unsure where to post it but it's relevant to Messi both in terms of the debate and the article itself.

I have always said it's an advantage to be shorter in football, if you are not a goalkeeper or central defender (or target man striker). Low centre of gravity as one example. Also, no surprise that La Liga is the shortest of the top 5 leagues on average (though still tallish).

Lots of interesting stuff in there, but this was illuminating. It does seem like extreme heights are of more benefit for the advantages they confer. There doesn't appear to be much advantage to being 5 foot 10 really as you don't get the benefits very short or very tall players do.

'Football’s evolution towards more extreme player profiles is clear. Across Europe’s top leagues, the trend is moving away from the average-sized player. Players who are either 5ft 7in or shorter or those who are 6ft 1in and taller are now seeing more minutes than ever before. In the Premier League, this has been especially evident in recent years.'
