It's a bit of a misleading story. "Common Assault" by itself isn't actually assault as most people would understand it, it's basically making someone fear that an assault might take place. If it there were any actual violence involved then he would have been charged with battery or ABH. So in other words, someone saw him rowing with his girlfriend, and this is the result.
