Reason why Illax is above him in the pecking order was directly noticable after the 1-0.

Illax got the ball on the left flank, could have taken the option to send Dembele deep with risk of losing the ball. Decided to make a turn, take time and chooses possession in the crucial minutes.

30 seconds later. Ball ends with Riqui, decides to take a pass without really looking and take time and passes into a Vall player. Lucky ball retention which leads to a chance. Decides to shoot from 25 meters instead of opening the play via Trincao.

Small differences but huge ones in these minutes. He needs to chill when needed. He is always in overdrive, which is not needed at times. You need to play the same rythm as your teammates. He has the same age as FDJ and passed the talent phase without really showing something. Pedri before and Illax now are showing bigger potential.

Squad player at best for now.

Completely agree. Puig played like a player with low IQ in the final minutes

Nah it was pretty apparent who could turn the game around of these two.
He made a few mistakes after the game was won, but nothing to judge him by. Frenkie is two years older btw.

Game was hardly "won" at 1-0. Puig was bombing up the field as if we needed one more goal. Situational awareness is very important for a midfielder. In that sort of late match scenario the tempo must be dropped, main priority is to keep possession and see out the remainder of the game. Puig tries to be everywhere at once and only has one gear.

If he is still with the squad, I can see him getting more opportunities when Messi leaves. Still as a sub most likely but as the first sub to change games. It is clear that for better or worse, when Puig comes on that he is at his best when everything goes through him. You can't do that with Messi for obvious reasons.

But it is always nice to have this type of profile on the bench. With few minutes can still enter with match rhythm. But please go on loan and get LaLiga experience.

They were with 10 men. When you are 1-0 and you have 11 vs 10 you're not supposed to have any problems keeping the score. Nothing wrong with going for the 2-0 when there is a chance to do so, but should have passed to Trincao.

But players trying shots when there are better options happen all the time.

Valladolid was never scoring after 1-0, before that they were very close to do it, at least until Puig came on and brought some stability and energy to the team.

Between coming on and the goal, Puig played perfectly, and brought some hope not only to me in my sofa, but also very clearly to the other players on the pitch.
After the goal he made three sloppy things, one of which was a bit selfishly trying the shot when he could've played Trincao free. He wouldn't do that if it was 0-0 I am sure.

I think it would have been more impressive for him to play in Trincao. He hasn't shown that he has a final pass yet, which is important if he wants to keep getting opportunities to come on.

Not shoot when he has something like 3 career goals, was way out and had two teammates to choose from.

Yes, indeed. He has a bit too much faith in his shot to put it politely.

It was a terrible decision.
The pass was easy to make, and he clearly saw it, but chose against it. This was probably partly because he was on a high after the goal, and partly him wanting to prove himself too much.

He did make one pass to Frenkie I think it was on the right flank that was a lot harder to make, but which he did with ease, as a Barcelona player should...

Valladolid showed in the 2nd half they were capable of maintaining a counter-attack threat even into the latter stages of the match. Red card or not, I don't see what the purpose is of sprinting with the ball through the middle of the park with only a few minutes remaining. Could easily lose it in a bad position and cause problems for us at the back. Goal should be to maintain sustained possession in the final third and take an opportunity if it presents itself, not blitzing the opposing box like it's 5-1 vs PSG.

Valladolid had given up, Puig was playing football the few minutes he got.
