Or Pele, Beckenbauer and Cruyff...
Washed up Insigne, Bernardeschi, Wanyama, Shaqiri, Driussi, Lodeiro, Pato, Douglas Costa and Chicharito are all the same age or younger than the best players of current Barcelona; Lewandowski and Busquets. Listing these names, I think it must be a pretty fun league to follow, if a bit mixed in quality.

Someone in the youtube comments posted Puigs stats from the game:
- 104 touches (most in entire team)
- 82/86 passes (most in the entire team)
- 95% passing accuracy
- 2 key passes
- 6 (5) long balls
- A dangerous shot
- 12 (7) ground duels won
- 3 tackles

I didn't watch the game, but it is pretty great to be on 82/86 passes whilst making passes like these two shown in the video. I will try and catch an entire game soon. It is very cheap to downplay stuff like the goal he scored, that was pure class and would've been scored against Real Madrid and Courtois too. It is extra fun to see him score and assist in the late stages of the game, my biggest worry about him was if he lacked the stamina to play and be threatening for entire games.

This would be the expectation, no? For a talented young Barcelona midfielder moving to MLS.

If he keeps performing on his gap year then he may open more doors in Europe. Atleast for those clubs who may have liked him, but didn't have the sample size to judge him from.

Still don't think it was his best move. For example you have Valencia who departed with Soler and effectively replaced him with two former teammates- Nico and Ilaix. And I think for the role that Soler played, Puig is the best offensive mid of the trio.

Yeah, I expected HIM to play well wherever he went, if he got the playing time. Yes having played for Barcelona in it self should be enough too, it is the expectation. I don't know how well Fontas and Vazquez have played who are also canteranos... There are others too I think, Soriano?
And I don't know anything about his offers or his reasoning, so it is hard to speculate, it is just fun to see him play for 90 minutes and scoring and assisting, there are very nice, inspirational stuff in these vids from these games.
It is a bit scary if European clubs were not interested this summer, but turned more interested a year from now. Would've thunk the scouts and clubs would be in better know than a random Bobo32 poster on a Barcelona forum...

MFATAP

Who could've guessed Xavi would gut Barca's midfield and rely on long desperate passes from the back.

Happy to see Puig killing it even with weak oppo as we knew he already was doing at Barca.

It's an unusual move but it actually makes a lot of sense. I wouldn't say the same for other MLS teams (i.e. Orlando, Columbus, Cincinnati) but Los Angeles has a lot going for it, in terms of Puig's lifetime career:

1) What Puig said is true— MLS is going to continue to improve and will likely be as good as top European leagues eventually. The US has all the financial resources to do so, more generations of kids are growing up playing soccer as the norm (non-existent during my childhood and teen years, unless you were a rich white boy who went to east coast private schools). Puig has already set himself up as an ambassador for this evolution. When his playing days are done, he'll find himself in a very good position to bring the US further into the global soccer community.

2) Guaranteed starter. The coach believes in him. Puig is already starting to give directions on the pitch.

3) Already developing an adoring fan base, both in Los Angeles and among MLS fans in general. He's responsible for taking 5 points out of the 3 full matches he's played, including memorable moments in all 3 games. Los Angeles is a massive multicultural city with folks from all around the globe. You can bet he'll get endorsement deals here he wouldn't get playing in Europe.

4) It's Los Angeles. You want connections, this is one of the places to be.

Compare this to being a rotation player on some better European team or even a regular player on some lower or mid-table team. Sure, the leagues/opponents are more difficult, but so what? What does it get him? He's 23. The top of most players' careers is their mid to late 20s. If he stays in Los Angeles through his full 3 year contract, he'll be 26 heading to his next team for his prime years.

Before Puig went to Galaxy espn fc's youtube channel barely ever had anything up on MLS, now there's Galaxy highlights from every match.

Believe it or not but there are football players that actually want to prove themselves in competition, and don't just play for lifestyle and connections.

Plenty of time for that, if he wants. He already fought to stay at Barca and lost. Could he have been a starter this year on a team that would be competitive for a title, either domestically or in Europe? It's unlikely he had offers from contending teams that would have given him a key playing role. And maybe he doesn't want to play against Barca domestically, which would rule out a La Liga team.

Also, what about playing for the sheer enjoyment of it? He loves to play the old Barca style— flowing, offensive, pressing. That's why fans love him— he enjoys the ball and wants to make magic with it. With Galaxy, he can go all out. He'd never be happy "proving himself in competition" on a conservative team.

He's proving what he's always wanted to prove— give me the ball and I'll make magic with it. In three starts, he's earned the team 5 points AND provided delightful moments of skill for the fans in every one of them.

Yeah but not everybody cares about that.

Puig is probably having the time of his life living in one of the most glamorous cities, enjoying and playing in the MLS.

It's not great for his personal legacy but fantastic for his personal life!

Also, he can always chill out in the MLS for a couple of years, get some confidence in his stride and return to Europe. Time is on his side.

Definitely not. No player is dreaming of winning MLS. The change of popularity from one continent to another will never happen, it's too big of a change and there's no reason for it to happen. European clubs have money and the competitions are still as prestigious to win.

Good for him and nothing new because we all knew the guy doesn't have any ambitions. To each their own.

But it's really silly to ask what there would be for him in a better league. Nico joined Valencia to potentially still make it at Barca, Puig had to be excluded from the pre-season tour to finally take a hint and fuck off, and then went straight to a retirement league. Completely different mentality there. Seems like his fans here care way more about his career than Puig himself.
