Minutes Played Comparison

There's been a lot of comments regarding the level of rotation in the squad. Here's a table of the minutes played by each player last season and this season in all tournaments. This season includes 34 La Liga games(so the game against Atletico isn't reflected in this) The table is ordered by the Increase/Decrease in minutes. In other words you can see the winners/losers. The players at the top increased there minutes, the players at the bottom decreased the most. It includes new transfers and players sold too.

Code:
[COLOR="#696969"]Name Minutes Played 2012	Minutes Played 2013	Increase in mins
Jordi Alba 3445 +3445

It's interesting to see Montoyas increase, it feels like he never play. The lack of time for Villa has been very frustrating.

Montoya played like straight 2 months (was it?) in earlier season when Alves injured, after Alves back from his injury Montoya disappear even from the bench (mostly)

Great thread, thanks for the stats! Very insightful. :)

Xavi only -80. He's getting younger by the day. Also, I know Thiago was injured early in the season, but going from 2866 to 1833 is terrible. Now link those two together...

Surprised to see that even Fabregas has played less. It seems like he played much more than last season.

I totally Forgot that Thiago was injured for a while but he still should be at least around the same amount of minutes as last season. He needs to play more next season. It feels like Tello played more than 575 minutes last season. He really made an impact at the end of the season. Good to see that he's seen a significant increase but he should really be at like almost 2000 minutes given his form. Hope to see him as a key figure next season.

Ok, so lets make it from who played the most minutes.

1. Messi - 4022
2. Valdes - 3759
3. Alves - 3679
4. Xavi - 3455
5. Alba - 3445

Just went for top 5.
Messi is understandable to be in our first list, Valdes can be said the same since he is a GK that barely changed in basic of football but we know Pinto played for our cup games, and Alves is our 3rd is  quite high since I remember he was out for 2 months or so in earlier season
Xavi is fourth but looks like not much different minutes with his last season but then again he isn't getting younger, give him a rest too, isn't we always looking forward to build our future thats why we bought our beloved Cesc back so Xavi can get a rest, moreover we have Thiago too, in short we overplayed Xavi for sure.
Alba 5th in the list, quite reasonable because he is the only one our real LB that consistent not only form but also fitness better than Adriano who mostly injured if play games in a row.

So... Maxwell played 666 minutes for us this season? :)

It's interesting to see Montoyas increase, it feels like he never play. The lack of time for Villa has been very frustrating.

Montoya barely played last year, he was a regular at the B team for the biggest part of the season

What frustrates me the most is when you compare Thiago's and Montoya's playing time to the likes of Xavi and Alves.

Thanks for the catch about Maxwell, it's fixed now. He played 666 minutes last season, that's why he had to go.

One thing to note is that last season Pep played a lot of 3-4-3 so there was more opportunity for the central midfielders to play. This season Cesc and Thiago have deferred more to Xavi and Iniesta. Also Thiago was injured for a couple of months this season. And of course this doesn't include the last four games of the season.

First, the above data does not tell a whole story. It doesn't explain injuries. Also, the heavy minuses are injured players and squad players. First XI players did not lose significant playing time. Instead squad players were interchanged.

Second, Guardiola did not believe in rotation either - the fool. So we went from a no rotating side to a little rotating side, mostly because of injury.

Regardless of statistics, Vilanova has said he does not like to rotate. That I think is foolish, especially given Barca's style of play, key players' ages, and Barca's priority of developing its own players, AND the upcoming financial constraints that Barca and all clubs will be under.

If rotation is not significantly increased next season, Barca will be in for a huge down cycle having burn out older players and not having youngsters with enough experience and not being able to buy as they please. Rotations are key for smoothing out cycles. Ah, it's frustrating!
