The controversy surrounding the dismissal of Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira at Levante has had the Spanish Press looking at the number of dismissals Los Blancos have had since José Mourinho took the reins at the Santiago Bernabéu.
In the 13 months since the Portuguese arrived the number of players to have been sent off before the end of the 90 minutes has now reached 16, with Khedira and Marcelo - the Brazilian was red-carded against Dinamo Zagreb last week - the latest ones to join the list. This figure has been achieved in 65 games under Mourinho, or at rate of one for every four played.
Under Manuel Pellegrini, the 2009/10 season resulted in five red cards in 48 official games while the 2008/09 campaign, shared between Bernd Schuster and Juande Ramos, saw 11 in 50. This means it has taken Mourinho’s team just one season to reach the 16 expulsions achieved in the previous two.
In a poll conducted by AS, in which 119,483 people took part, 65% blamed Mourinho as the main culprit for the brawl at Levante which resulted in Khedira’s dismissal, with 19% blaming referee Turienzo Álvarez and 16% Khedira and Ángel di María.
