Samuel Umtiti

I think he really is the best cb.
Great defensive skills, but mostly, I love those forward balls. He's always looking to cut through the midfield with those. :worthy:

I wasn't expecting Umtiti to be back to his best form this soon. It feels like he was never injured, just took a 2 month vacation.

Maybe I should be more reserved, but watching him in defense is, for me at least, just exciting as watching a world class midfielder.
He's a long term asset here and proof how smart investment are way cheaper. Sure, from time to time we must make bigger financial interventions, but our constant should be to grab talents while they are half cooked and "cheap". Of course, if we can pick them from our own garden, even better. Titi was around 30M if I'm not mistaken, Raki 18M. That's cheap. I hope Yerry and Semedo will follow the same path. And we got Roberto from our own garden, not to mention veterans.

Every time I see him perform I understand how good of a team the 2008-2009 was. I mean I rate Umtiti the same as Abidal and to think our defence also had Puyol, Pique and Alves in their prime is amazing.

Best CB in the world?

Absolutely, he needs to get the recognition for it. He combines the best possible skills you could want in a CB performing at an incredible level in the most difficult system for a CB to perform.

There's little comparison between what the likes of Chiellini and Godin do in parked bus sit-back defense compared to Umtiti in our high line. 90% of what they do is cleaning up and clearing the ball or winning headers. Umtiti covers so much space and defends like a beast even out wide when he has to cover for Alba. His passing out the back is as good as it gets, on the very highest tier for ball playing CB's. He can dribble the ball and retain it under high pressure even in our defensive third, dissipating threats. He's also one of the best around at recovering loose balls using his pace/strength.

He also has godly big games. He was a top 3 performer in the 6-1 comeback and 3-2 Clasico last season. He does extremely well even when the rest of the team was getting shafted like the Supercup in August or vs Juve in Turin. Also had very notable games vs Atleti. There's literally nothing more one could ask of Umtiti, he's building his case as one of the true all time greats and it's only just the beginning.

Yep don is spot on about being able to play in a high line as oppose to those defenders who sit deeper and clear the ball and get all this praise.

These type of defenders have a much more difficult job than others.

But is umtiti the best? I dont know but he is up there.
