You are wrong in making out they were exposed as stopped paying him. That is clean made up to try and make out they were correct to pay him.

No one directly from Barcelona have claimed they paid him for neutrality and I doubt that will be their legal defense either.

El Mundo reported that Rosell and Bartomeu's entourage claimed that they paid him so that it would be fair as they believed Real Madrid were getting a lot of calls from refs. Rosell and Bartomeu themselves did not say it.

What their entourage may or may not claim is irrelevant when everyone involved in this case from Barcelona's side including those two are going to say they paid him for analysis and other shit that they believed was legal and something other teams also did.

Unless the prosecution comes up with concrete evidence of Barca paying Negreira to influence the referees, and they have concrete evidence of Negreira influencing referees, this case will probably come down to tax related offences.

The optics however even if we get away from this is bad.

That said who even fucking knows what will happen the next few weeks and months even.

From Barca's POV they better pray nothing concrete other than this money trail comes through.

In 2018 they decided to bite the bullet. Barca were not forced to pay him, but they did to keep the scandal quiet. Fairly simple and logical.

2018 was when he lost his position as VP of refs committee.

Negreira even states himself after we cut the payments that we 'did not fulfill the contract' meaning we ended it early for some reason (he lost his position...).

Its obvious for me why we were paying him. I don't think it worked and that any serious benefits were brought about by it but we tried to do it.

Which as I said goes against the idea they were being 'blackmailed' as he still was in position to do that.

Reality is they stopped paying him when he had any influence and were not paying him in fear of being exposed.

Now the argeument is what that 'influence' amounts to... is it better access to reports from someone on the referee side or is it attempting to influence decisions.

They will keep quiet as can and say 'prove it'.

But the blackmail argument falls when he can still blackmail them after 2018 but they stop payimg him once he leaves his role.

The nearest to 'blackmail' they can get in that scenario is to say they were being led to believe they needed his information/reports from inside to monitor things fully and keep it 'fair'.
