Surely Xavi lied to Fatporta about his real intentions, and Fatporta took him on his word instead of his contract. If Fatporta told the truth, he'd be forever shamed and embarrassed needing to resign, so now he's letting Xavi destroy the team even further next season until total decimation gives him the public support to pay Xavi's ransome. He's probably gimped enough to think Xavi will relinquish his contract at that point, when obvious Xavi has proven he has no qualms putting himself before Barca's survival.
