Vitor Roque (loaned to Real Betis)

For what it's worth he worked the best for me in FM as inverted winger on the right.
That's it settled then

Especially with the way Xavi has setup has wide men and failed to move Ansu, Memphis, Ferran, Raphinha closer to the forward as an attacking interior.
Xavi has tried a lot of different things on the left, he has only been uncompromising on the right. Ansu, Ferran, Memphis (ffs) were just not good enough.

To change Roque for Gavi on the left seems like a pretty natural conclusion to me.

I don't think Xavi has got the left attacker close enough to goal.

It makes sense for Vitor to get his initial minutes in that position but his talents is not in the dribble or working in limited spaces.

Anyways, Marca says that Roque will join in Winter market almost certainly, as more cap space will be available then.

Transfers for summer priority will be on defensive mid and an offensive mid.

I think he has a good chance of succeeding here if Xavi doesn't use him as a winger. He's not a winger and cannot play as a winger.

Who the fuck cares about dribbling as a 9? He doesn’t need to be Garrincha in order to succeed.

Suarez, Lewy etc. are not the best dribblers or fastest players either.

Obviously he is not at all close to their overall level, but in terms of profile why are people on this board so obsessed with speed and dribbling (as opposed to other qualities) when it comes to the number 9 position?

If you watch Paranaense you will see part of the reason his dribble rate is low.

It's basically a case of trying to get the ball to Roque with no support or quality, and hoping something happens.

Not that he is an elite dribbler or anything, but they are really bad offensively and struggle to put passes together in 2023.

People are comparing him to Depay as if that's some terrible slight on him. I'd take an 18 year old Depay clone for 35m in this market. Depay was not even that bad here and we have seen at Atletico that he isn't a bad player at all when used properly.

Vitor will obviously progress in the next few years and hopefully by the age of 21 he will be Suarez Lite. If that happens, then, given the current market, it would have been a terrific transfer.

What isn't debatable is that Xavi HAS to get this transfer right. His job could be riding on it. His transfers for fees have been almost unanimous failures and if Vitor is another one, there will be no chance of any trophies next season.

Which will mean, Xavi adiós.

Here are some dribbling stats for starting number 9 this season in big clubs (using footystats):

EPL: Haaland 38% - G. Jesus 45.5% - Isak 40% - Nunez 45.5% - Kane 38.5%

France: Mbappe 39.3% - Openda 41.7%

Italy: Lautaro 45.6% - Osimhen 38% - Immobile 42% - Giroud 41.7% - Vlahovic 42%

Spain: Lewandowski 51.8% - Benzema 47.5% - Morata 54%

Germany and some other clubs don't use conventional 9
There is clear increase in Liga, but otherwise the Roque numbers seems to relate well with conventional number 9, which he is.
Him being a 9 is something that will always needs to be remembered, he isn't a guy who will play on the wings and dribble, he is simply not good technically enough for a winger, and doesn't have a speed advantage. For a 9 he is fairly fast and technical, strong and athletic too although he is short than your ideal 9.
