Wayne Rooney

I wouldn't be able to doubt that he'd be fantastic here at Barca. But indeed he's becoming a United great, Ferguson didn't make any good signings this summer but Rooney has stepped up and deserves all the praise he's been getting.

considering one of his signings scored the equaliser and another signing created the winner and was voted MOTM, I find that statement to be a bit incredulous.

valencia, especially, has been awesome. but they need someone else to score goals along with rooney. i.e. berbatov. and while he's playing better lately, he's still not goo enough.

I read a piece somewhere that summed it up rather well, though. "while rooney has stepped up to become the new ronaldo, no one has stepped up to become the new rooney."

Oh come on, just because he scored in the final of the Mickey Mouse cup it doesn't make him a good player. Owen has scored 3 goals which is very weak indeed, and I think it's pretty illogical to argue that he has been a good signing. MAXI LOPEZ for christ's sake scored a goal in a far more important match, would you argue it incredulous to make the statement that he was a crap signing?? Owen is far too injury prone, far too invisible in most matches and I honestly don't think he will stay with United for long - if he does, then as nothing more than a squad player.

Secondly, while Valencia has not been a bad signing he hasn't been great either, you may argue that he's a great player because of your admiration for united but he wouldn't really fit in in any other big team. He's just not a game changer. He's never going to fill the void left by Cronaldo, and while that might not be a concern, because they don't really need anyone to fill it, what I'm saying is that if Rooney left, you could argue that Valencia was a great signing Mickey Mouse Cup final MoM, but United would be struggling to qualify for Europe.

* Edit - Owen has scored 3 in the PL, 4 in Europe, and add to that the 2 League Cup goals

Out of all strikers in Europe at the moment theres no one I can think of who would fit into our team more than Rooney. Deny it all you want but he is on his day and currently on of the most feared strikers in world football.

I cant see him being sold, even although everyone does have a price I just cant see Rooney going anywhere.

sorry, I took you literally when you said "signings" - owen's not a great player anymore and is very injury prone, but he cost them nothing and is on a pay-as-you-play deal.

he's already scored some important goals for them, and considering he was free, that seems like a good signing to me.

this argument is full of holes and hypotheticals.

valencia's not playing for other big teams, he's playing for united, so what does it matter if he wouldn't fit in anywhere else? I'm a bit confused about your point there. messi wouldn't excel for chelsea, but so what?

and no, he was never going to fill the ronaldo void. but he wasn't signed to do that. united switched formations. it's 442 now, with the goals coming primarily from the forwards, with the wingers creating pressure and chances, and chipping in with a few goals; which is exactly what valencia's doing.

if rooney left, they would sign a striker to replace him. so while they may drop a bit (as rooney is really flipping good) there's nothing to say they'd struggle to qualify for europe. I mean, if they just sold rooney and didn't replace him then obviously they'd suck, but would they really be that stupid?

* Edit - Owen has scored 3 in the PL, 4 in Europe, and add to that the 2 League Cup goals

1 of those PL goals won the manchester derby.

3 of those CL goals won them the wolfsburg game, which put them top.

1 of those CC goals drew them level in the final.

like I said to ducky a few months back, tevez is world's better as a player but owen cost nothing and costs relatively nothing in wages and so his contributions have made him a decent signing.

we only paid 5m for maxwell and while he's not a stellar player he's pushed abidal to play at a better level and has been solid enough when called upon himself. is maxwell a great player? no. is a great signing? yes.

you get me?

Hey Meta, in the very unlikely case that Rooney leaves United (hopefully to join us), what striker do you think could get to replace him and deliver instantly on his first season? Also with United's financial trouble, do you think they'd be able to sign said new striker?

not really. he'd have to be the lone striker because he's proven to be awful in the wide areas. We'd have to fit Ibrahimovic somehow into the team...

Awful? hardly, he got 16 goals last year playing out wide the majority of time, thats not awful at all

well villa, obv. benzema? I dunno. aguero would be awesome (would probs work better with berbatov as well). dzeko. there's plenty of options out there. and I'd wager if they sell rooney it'd be for major coin, which would then go into replacing him.

but who knows?

again it's a hypothetical, coz he won't leave.

he isn't what he is this season though is he?

Thats because hes playing in his rightful position, but by no means can u see hes proven to be awful when he bagged 16 goals there.. plus he assisted a few aswell, so that statement is wrong,

but if he was at barca, (never gonna happen) we would have to play him in te centre, to get the best out of him...
