No player outpassed the Azulgrana maestro in the EURO (620)
The Barça vice-captain, who had two assists, was one of the best players in the final
86% of Xavi's passes were successful
Xavi Hernández’ Eurocup campaign started off slow but ended with a bang. In the final against Italy, the Azulgrana's performance was magisterial: a laser guided assist to Jordi Alba in the 2-0 play and winning the ball back and assisting Fernando Torres for the 3-0. Xavi simply outplayed everyone in the midfield last night in Kiev.
Breaking the barrier of 600 passes
In fact, Xavi is the player that attempted the most passes in the competition (620). Of those, he completed 82% of them (520). These stats become all the more impressive if we take into account where Xavi plays on the pitch, the playmaker is always surrounded by opponents whose sole goal is to stifle the creation of Spain’s attacking play. No other player broke the barrier of 600 passes.
In the final, Xavi completed 84 passes out of 92 attempts. His performance allowed Spain to play at a level that hadn’t been seen up until that point in the tournament.
Three more in the Top 10
The list of players with the most attempted passes has other Azulgrana players on it. Sergio Busquets, with 513, is in fourth position (84% completion rate), while Jordi Alba (501 passes, 84% completion rate) and Andrés Iniesta (465 passes, 75% completion rate) are fifth and sixth, respectively.
