At least we can go get someone younger and hungrier who can grow (in talent and in value). These saudi deals are weeding out the mercenaries and the declining players who Barca have been over reliant on in past years.
My guess is that once they can offload a couple of players they'll go for a...
Why not look at Hjulmand? 1 year left on contract. Captain. Just turned 24 and a classic destroyer type who was top 1% in interceptions according to fbref. Cheap young with decent experience.
Through selling some players plus all the salary coming off the books. Kessie, Dest, Nico, Abde, Garcia, Ferran, maybe Dembele..
He was a great player but everyone's time comes.
Either grab a freebie like Gundo to take his place or spend a bit to get someone with a year left on their contract like an amrabat/kovacic.
He had a couple of good interceptions but is too much a liability defensively to have him for more years. This team can't keep holding onto players too long.
His positioning was a bit off on a few occasions which let vini past him. Problem was that Busq couldn't provide the cover on that side or was sucked in a couple of times leaving space behind. He's not a natural RB so this tactic should only be used sparingly.
It can work and is needed when you are rebuilding. Pedri and gavi have been doing fine. Raphina had little upside. Ferran was young at least but still a lot of money. Still no proper RB. List goes on and on.
Why is this team so bad at buying players? While Barto's reign was disasterous, Laporta's second stint has not been great, not even good.
Seems he got bullied in paying for Ferran up front when a loan was the right move. Raphina would be an ok signing at the cut rate price he would have been...
So what's the excuse for Laporta and co now with Bayern being able to get him on loan and yet Barca paid through the nose to get Ferran last January? You can say age difference but young players get loaned out all the time..
Yes, barca have some good young talent, but not enough for a team in transition. Not enough goal threats, not enough creativity and holes in defence.
Even if this team made it out of the group, it was not ready for a deep run. Both decision makers and Xavi share the blame.
Poor squad planning that harkens back to the late 90's early/2000's era (though not as bad). Barca really needed to be smart and shrewd with signings that had potential to grow into lethal players (and the increase of value to along with it).
But no, they went after guys like raph who were...
