Why is Ronaldo even in this conversation?

He's not South America (or Xavi), he can't be the best player in the world.

Exactly.

I like Messi, not so much but I like him. I feel like his national team has let him down, from a coaching perspective and his team mates were very individualistic. Its like taking kids to a theme park and wanting to take a family/group photo at the entrance but the moment they see the rides, everyone runs off in a different direction and only one or two kids are left.

But I also blame him for not pulling something out of his ass like he does for Barcelona. I argued a lot and still of the opinion that Xavi activates him and has had a huuuuuuuge influence on his career. BUT, he is magical, what he does is surreal, so he is above world class. In Europe he is THE Galactico and while I don't expect the same thing in Argentina, if he had pulled off/attempted ONE ball-exploding-insane run he would have made that team his, under his control and he would have separated himself above and beyond anyone else.

The only two players on his side are Lavezzi and Higuain. One is shit and the other is crippled. And to a lesser extent Aguero. Di Maria/Tevez/Banega all abandoned him. Zanetti is too old and Mascherano is too far away in the midfield to be on his side.

Congratulations, you just gave the most balanced summary of Messi on this forum. Not that the bar was very high mind you, but you hurdled well over it.

I agree 110%.

Messi clearly deserved this award. However, I have to say Ronaldo probably did deserve to be 2nd. Xavi is probably my favorite player in the world and Ronaldo is a total ass, BUT the man scored 53 goals last season! I know a lot of them were scored against weak opposition at the end of the season, or scored from the penalty spot, or lame tap-ins, BUT 53 goals is insane no matter what. Messi scored the same number of goals, but appeared in one more match. Ronaldo also actually assisted people this year, having 14 assists as well.

Messi is the best in the world, but Ronaldo is clearly 2nd, despite his bad attitude. Xavi has a HUGE influence on Barcelona's play, but IMO he had a down year last year compared to the two prior years. This is somewhat clear from looking at his assist total, which was only 10 last year. Obviously assists are FAR from everything that makes a midfielder great, but part of Xavi's greatness is his ability to give amazing through balls for goals. He wasn't doing that as much last year. IMO that role went more to Iniesta and Messi. This left Xavi being fantastic at setting the tempo, but still clearly less influential than he has been. I actually think Iniesta deserved to be ahead of Xavi.

IMO it's pretty obvious why Messi can't "pull something out of his ass" for Argentina like he does with Barcelona. This is where people should realise just how good Barca are, everything is set up for him perfectly in Barca (not just by xavi, but iniesta, busquets, alves etc.) and he doesn't need to spend most for his time chasing back winning possession and doing a midfielders job, he has to cover so much ground in every argentina game it's not even funny. of course he will perform at 50% when he is so tired mentally and physically. Look at that easy chance he missed at the end of the Uruguay game, the Barcelona Messi would not miss that sitter in 10000 years, but when the poor guy has to run up and down all night winning possession and distributing balls to his retarded team mates then it's only natural he won't perform his offensive duties as effectively. simple.

Messi hattrick tonight! Come one Barca

If he wins another ballon d'Or which is very likely, he will go joint on 3 ballon d'Or's with cruyff, platini & van basten but will be come the first player ever to be involved in 4 Ballon dOr's

I'm not sure if this is what you were saying, but I think it's interesting to point out that with the inevitable third Ballon D'or for Messi, he will become the most prolific player in Ballon D'or history.

The list of players who have won it 3 times will be:
Messi
Cruyff
Platini
Van Basten

However, Van Basten never placed in the top 3 otherwise. Cruyff got one 3rd place on top of his three wins. Platini got two 3rd places on top of his three wins. Messi will have one 2nd place and one 3rd place on top of his three wins, which is marginally better than Platini's record.

Yes that is pretty much what I was saying but what I meant by the 4xBD is that this will be his 4th consecutive BD & that has not been done...
