Pele talking shit again about Messi and saying Neymar is overall better than him, and that he doesn't perform in his NT ...

Could someone please send this idiot back to the Museum where he escaped from? So much jealousy towards Messi, he's making a fool of himself. What I would give to see Messi lift the WC Trophy '14 in front of Pele.

"- If you compare their individual qualities, I think Neymar is much better and more complete."

Much better? MUCH BETTER???????? WWWWWTTTTFFFFFFFFF???????

It's not that unheard of tbh old guys with big achievements and long time praise usually take it a bit hard when someone much younger gets praised for things similar to what they used to get the spot light for. Their reactions gets revealed when they talk about/are asked of their opinion of the young wonder which actually indicates that people still got respect for them and are willing to know what they've got to say despite the emergence of the wonder boy and It goes back to the personality and degree of self respect the old guy possess that defines what reactions they're going to receive after them giving their opinion.

Some are always/most of the time/ usually supportive of the emergence of the new talent like Diego which increases the respect for them and usually cement their high position in their field and some are insecure or scared of being forgotten or jealous ( something you don't expect from such age and experience but is in no way infrequent) these guys sometimes are able to deal with their insecurity and avoid immature comments and some other can't hold it, Pele being a case of this category, which results in loss of respect for them and that can intensify their jealousy and foul mouthing. There can be some other group that prefers keep their opinion to themselves because they're reserved or want to avoid being judged or create misunderstandings.

The expression of opinion also depends on personality/opinion/actions of the wonder boy but in our case Leo Messi has always showed humility and high respect for old greats so the foul mouthing and stupid comments from them are in no way justified.

Pele's hatred for argentina makes him even more stupid, that's kinda obvious. Messi could start flying or reach the speed of light, and Pele would still say that's nothing much. I think we should ignore his nonsense comments. And also, he says that about Neymar cause he plays for Santos, and he wants to make him more valuable.

Saw an interesting documentary on Suisse TV last night about sports psychology - they profiled a few particular types and I found it interesting on how the addiction to sport is not unlike that for a drug...The void that can occur once sport ends can be debilitating in a variety of ways

Some collapse and descend into destructive behaviour like a drug addict (Maradona comes to mind) or suicidal (Like with Speed or Enke I suppose)...Many become ultra competitive into their late years regardless of the endeavour or sport (Made me wonder if Pep fell into this category)

So I don't know that you can put Pele into a 'What is this old man thinking' category...He was an elite athlete in his time and his likely wired differently than most of us - so easy to see he has an axe to grind with others, particularly those who aren't Brasilian

Anyway, it was pretty interesting to ponder

But Maradona actually got into drugs before the end of his career. and also interesting guess about Pep. but Pep has always been coach material ,even when he was like 20 something he wouldn't stop giving his teammates instructions to the point they sometimes had to ask him to shut up :)D) it was always one of his fascinations imo and him and Barca were a match made in heaven. I don't know if he started his career in any other club but Barca we could talk about him the same way we do today. I guess Mou is more of the third type category as "ultra competitive" is exactly what comes to mind when you think of him (after the insults, i mean for barca supporters :D) and also started after his super short career as a failed player.

I think he supports him not only because he's playing in Santos but also because, unlike Leo, Neymar is no threat to his throne yet. if he actually turns out to get even half the player he is hyped to be relax and see the fireworks the the old legend will send his way.

I remember a good article I read a few years ago, I think it was in World Soccer, comparing Pele and Maradona's personalities. The way one person characterized Pele was a guy who, growing up in poverty, made it his complete focus to have the money he never had as a child and to be successful at all costs. His entire life has been about marketing his legacy, and Neymar, as a Santos and Brazil player, is another opportunity for him to use a successor to market himself.

Both Pele and Maradona have been caught up in scandal after scandal as their lack of business knowledge has lead to poor decision making as well as more personal issues - both refused to recognize illegitimate children for instance. Pele spent years refusing to recognize his daughter, and when she died a few years ago he didn't even attend the funeral.

Pele has done a better job protecting his image in the mainstream media than Maradona, because he's a lot less impulsive and doesn't have the same addictive personality - except for an addiction to himself of course. It's interesting how Maradona's legal fight with his illegitimate son and all the nasty things he said about him is common knowledge, while the same story of Pele and his daughter is much more obscure (except perhaps in the Brazilian media?).

But between the ties to government corruption, scandals, and constant stupid comments, this is nothing new for Pele. All he cares about is making money and protecting his legacy. Neymar might not make him money personally (though it probably helps some of his friends at Santos), but he makes a good vehicle for self-promotion.

Maradona was asked to comment on Pele's claims that Neymar is better than Messi.
Diego: "Pele got his pills mixed up. He should see his doctor."
