I remember a good article I read a few years ago, I think it was in World Soccer, comparing Pele and Maradona's personalities. The way one person characterized Pele was a guy who, growing up in poverty, made it his complete focus to have the money he never had as a child and to be successful at all costs. His entire life has been about marketing his legacy, and Neymar, as a Santos and Brazil player, is another opportunity for him to use a successor to market himself.
Both Pele and Maradona have been caught up in scandal after scandal as their lack of business knowledge has lead to poor decision making as well as more personal issues - both refused to recognize illegitimate children for instance. Pele spent years refusing to recognize his daughter, and when she died a few years ago he didn't even attend the funeral.
Pele has done a better job protecting his image in the mainstream media than Maradona, because he's a lot less impulsive and doesn't have the same addictive personality - except for an addiction to himself of course. It's interesting how Maradona's legal fight with his illegitimate son and all the nasty things he said about him is common knowledge, while the same story of Pele and his daughter is much more obscure (except perhaps in the Brazilian media?).
But between the ties to government corruption, scandals, and constant stupid comments, this is nothing new for Pele. All he cares about is making money and protecting his legacy. Neymar might not make him money personally (though it probably helps some of his friends at Santos), but he makes a good vehicle for self-promotion.
