That may be true but the thing with messi is he's probably not even on the same level intellectually. Yes he makes genius runs, passes etc but I can guarantee you he has the IQ of a carrot. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though since it keeps him humble and away from the spotlight which is why he's been able to dominate the game more effectively than anyone before.

I don't see any proof to the contrary.

I don't get how you can say that he's stupid just because he doesn't have doctorates or say the things you'd like him to say in a press conference. Knowing math, history, and other school subjects is KNOWLEDGE, not intelligence. Intelligence is the ability to process and understand things easily and then apply it.

Just because your definition of a "smart person" is one who can wave an impressive transcript in your face doesn't mean that Messi is stupid. He's not going to be the smartest person in the world obviously, but he's not a dull idiot. I'd say he's well above average.

Seems quite likely that he'd be good at math imo. Other than that..innate intelligence and success in school have a different relationship from person to person. Bit premature to conclude he's thick before you ever lay eyes on him, never mind have a conversation or two.
It is annoying how often he's hailed as a genius though, and often for simple things such as a nice pass/dribble/shot. Perhaps Xavi is a bona fide genius in the middle of the park, but Messi..

Lacking charisma and having a dull/shy personality does not equate to a lack of intelligence. It's a bit silly to claim that someone lacks intelligence when you know diddly squat about them.

I agree, he has a natural instinct that puts him above pretty much everyone else on the pitch. You can claim that that's intelligence on it's own but then you're going into a whole science about the meaning of intelligence. My point is that he quite simply is not, no matter how much people wish he was.

How can you claim he is not intelligent while acknowledging the definition of "intelligent" is suject to debate? Are you saying your understanding of someone being intelligent (or not) is the correct understanding?

And based on what are people claiming Messi is not intelligent? Just because he sounds "dopey"? Just because he always talks about soccer and his family? Just because he is allegedly not at math?

True. The word genius is used too much in general and especially for Messi. There are times when he places it perfectly in the top corner and gets hailed as a genius. That's not genius, that's talent/skill and practice.

I think it's just the case of commentators not finding the right noun/adjective in the moment. Running out of words to describe Messi. Should follow Pep's advice.
