Alves said that Messi has the talent given by God but Ronaldo had to work hard to become such a great player. Messi trains like everyone else on the team but Ronaldo does more and more to improve even more.

Messi trains the hardest on the team though :/

Both had to work hard, but cristiano takes it to a new level. I think he is groundbreaking when it comes to training and improving his overall game. Messi also works hard, probably the most of any barca player but less than cristiano. He's better because he has more natural talent, some of his game is no different than early in hs career which proves this. His training helps with maintaining his level, while with cristiano it's not only maintaining but improving and adding new aspects to his game.

Messi is the better player because he is so naturally gifted and that's why he's GOAT potential. Although cristiano is a great role model and shows with attitude and hard work you can reach exceptional levels. He's added aspects to his game that were unnatural to him before through this (free kicks, headers)

In this sense C. Ronaldo is a better role model I guess, assuring those of us who are not necessarily that talented and gifted in the first place that working hard will make your dream come true.

I think it's absurd to say that Ronaldo is not "that talented". Clearly he's incredibly talented. He's just less talented than Messi... but that says enough in itself, doesn't it?

You could also argue, however, that Messi is the better role model, because he was the one who was short, thin, weak, with health issues, and look at him now.

What worries/concerns me about Messi is that if he mostly relies on his natural talent (unlike C. Ronaldo who seems to go the extra mile to challenge himself to be better), when he gets older, slower and not as agile as he is today, his game is going to decline quite a bit unless he consciously trains to maintain that level. Will Leo be as threatening and prolific as CR7 at age 28?

Of course, CR7 is relatively less talented compared to Messi, and probabaly more talented than 99.9% of all the other players out there. :p

And sure, Messi can be a role model too.

I think it's exactly the opposite. Ronaldo's game is all about his physical attributes. When Ronaldo's body starts declining, his game will suffer greatly. Messi doesn't rely as much on his phyisical attributes, half of what he does comes from inside of his head, and by that logic, he'd have a less bad time declining than Ronaldo.

True too. I just hope by then Messi will be able to transition into a Xavi-like playmaker role with his superb vision and skills when he can't out-run and out-dribble the defenders to score that many goals any more.

28? Are you serious? Try 32 or something like that.

At 28 Leo will be just as great as now and thus of course greater than Ronaldo.

Both Ronaldo and Messi will be great once their physical attributes start to fail them.
Messi can be transformed into a number 10 ( mid) while Cristiano can easily become a # 9 ( center forward ).
If you look at Messi's videos when was little, his game style is almost identical to his game today.
This tells me that Messi was always talented and therefore relies more on talent than hard work; although, it is true that you must still work hard to keep a good physical form.
On the other hand, if Cristiano relies more on his physique than natural talent; that means he's had to work very hard to get to where he is today. While he's obviously talented, I think his hard work had taken him to where he's today.

Ronaldo is the more physically gifted player. Sure he has worked and honed his physique to squeeze every ounce of performance out of his natural gift, but the fact still remains that his superior ability comes from his overall superior physical attributes.

Messi on the other hand relies mostly on deception and control. His game revolves around using his head to augment the physical part. Obviously he has physical talents and he has also worked hard to hone this aspect, but he's not going to be confused for a physical specimen.

Of the two players, Messi's game has the better chance to stand up to the passing of time. He'll require adaption obviously. He won't always have that incredible agility. But the mental aspect will only increase with age and therein lies his greatest talent.

I don't think Ronaldo can be an overly effective CF. He doesn't seem to enjoy the physicality that is needed to be great at that position. He also doesn't know how to create much space with two CF draped all over him, or to play with his back to goal. He might learn these skills later on though. I still think the physicality aspect is a big hurdle.

I would say you've got it the wrong way round, when they both start to lose speed and quickness Messi will be able to rely on his brain, he will still be able to take players on and he will also still be a great passer. Ronaldo on the other hand won't be able to use his pace to beat players. His passing isn't as good and he will probably just become a striker.
